Those of us free of disabilities tend to take our working senses for granted--until something goes wrong, especially when it comes to hearing loss. Many factors influence hearing, and its diminishment can be either gradual or sudden.

So if you are having difficulty hearing in general and/or have trouble distinguishing words when people speak to you, then you could be suffering from hearing loss and require a hearing evaluation to decide the right course of action to help you.

But what could be the underlying cause for your situation? As mentioned previously, there could be numerous aspects of your everyday life that could be influencing your ability to hear and understand normal conversation.

Age is one of the most common. Your ability to perceive higher frequencies starts evanescing once you reach early adulthood, so the older you get, the more you are affected by what is called presbycusis. Fortunately, this does not usually lead to complete deafness and can be corrected if necessary by a simple hearing aid.

Noise-induced hearing loss--sometimes shortened to NIHL--can result from either short-term exposure to an extremely loud sound or from long-term moderately loud noise. This may occur if you live close to an airport or freeway, but it also frequently comes when you work in an industry that requires loud equipment and does not provide adequate hearing protection. Over a period of months or years, your ability to comprehend higher and lower frequencies is lost, and, coupled with age or another factor, NIHL can lead to partial or complete deafness.

That is why it is important to follow recommended safety procedures, especially in the workplace. Talk to your supervisor about adequate ear protection, and remind him or her that "safe" exposure to certain loud noises should be limited to about two hours (or less, depending on the decibel level).
Be mindful of proper ear protection in noisy settings outside your workplace. Concerts, firing ranges, lawn mowing, and other common environments you might encounter in your everyday life require hearing guards! So keep earplugs handy, and make sure they fit properly before exposing yourself to the sounds that could potentially damage your hearing forever.

Genetics are often the basis for hearing loss, and it does not always manifest itself from birth. Instead, it could be a progressive form, depending on the syndrome that exists through your genetic inheritance. You should talk to an audiologist to get more information.

Finally, a wide array of diseases may affect varying parts of the ear which contribute to hearing. Measles, meningitis, mumps, and syphilis are just a few, and deafness is but one attribute to these terrible illnesses, so if you suspect you have any one of these diseases, get treatment right away!

Fortunately, audiology has progressed, and there are many treatments available to you. You don't have to live with hearing loss. Get a hearing evaluation from a qualified Maryland audiology specialist today.
