Cold laser therapy uses beams of light not in a destructive manner such as those employed by certain cosmetic and surgical procedures. What's being used here is something that's low intensity. Also known as soft or therapeutic laser, this doesn't produce heat which can be felt by the person exposed to it as pain sensation.

Many people take advantage of this treatment. That's because of the different benefits it offers to the health. There are physicians who recommend this to their patients, depending on the health problem. It is usually used together with other forms of treatment like physical therapy or intake of drugs. However, as of this moment the views about this form of treatment are still divided.

According to its proponents, low intensity light beams can have a positive effect on tissues, especially those which are injured. This aids in the healing process as it promotes cell division, especially protein cells, thereby shortening the recovery period. It also helps in the development of new blood vessels. This allows more blood, nutrients and oxygen to get to where they're needed - injured body parts.

Swelling and pain are two other things this treatment form is said to be effective in relieving. It encourages the body's natural capability to heal itself. When the healing process is hastened, the injured individual can attain swift recovery. Many professionals recommend the therapy for arthritic pain, back pain, tendonitis, strains, sprains and other related injuries.

Faster wound healing may also be achieved when exposed to low intensity laser. Again, this has something to do with the promotion of cell division. However, it is said that there's insufficient scientific evidence to back this up. There are certain studies being performed to find out just how effective the treatment is for healing wounds. Some individuals claim that they have noted improvements after undergoing multiple sessions.

The number of trips to a clinic offering the procedure that's needed will depend on how long the injury has been around and its severity. Acute ones normally needs 8-10 sessions only. There are people who said they were able to experience improvements after just a single session. But for conditions that are chronic in nature, it may take more sessions that that, sometimes more than 20. The great news is a session usually lasts for only 5 minutes or at times even shorter.

It's also used it as a substitute to acupuncture. Instead of using needles, beams of light are focused on certain body points. This is said to yield the same benefits as when needles are being used.

You may encounter clinics claiming that cold laser therapy is an effective way to get rid of smoking addiction. According to their claims, the treatment helps in boosting the amount of endorphins in the body, copying nicotine effects on the brain. This is what's said to cause the smoker to crave smoking less. But as of now, no evidence to such exists. There are also clinics claiming this treatment can help deal with hypertension, cerebral palsy, herpes, migraine headaches, etc. Be wary when choosing which clinic you should go for, as some of them use only LED and not laser.
