People should not underestimate the value of having a first aid kit around when needed. It may not be something we think of everyday but can be vital in an emergency situation. They should be kept in several strategic places to ensure always having easy access to them. The house and the car are the two main places where most people will store store them.

It is always better to be prepared for an emergency. You should check your kits regularly to replace batteries and replenish supplies. When you are ready ahead of time, it helps you to handle emergency situations better than if you had not taken the time to prepare. This holds true in almost any situation.

Taking a first aid course is a great thing to do. Having the knowledge and skills necessary to perform life saving tasks is beneficial in an emergency situation. Still, we can get rusty on those skills when they are not practiced all the time. This is one reason why keeping a first aid manual in your kit is a great idea. You can always refer to it should you need to when you are faced with an emergency.

Keep the important pages book marked in your manual so you can find them in a hurry. Keeping a list of important emergency contact numbers inside is also a good idea. This prevents fumbling for them later. A little organization now goes a long way later in an emergency situation when there is no time to lose.

There are several things that are very useful to have that may not come in regular kits from the store. A CPR mask is a mask with a one way valve that allows you to administer CPR while reducing your exposure to any germs they might have. These come in simple plastic sheet form to more complex masks. Choose the one that you will be comfortable with.

Rubber gloves are also a good idea. Always put them on before treating the injured person. Gloves can help prevent germs from being transferred between you and the person needing treatment. Sanitary hand cleaner is a good thing to have available. There is not always access to soap and water.

Eye wash is a very important article that everyone should have. Having a way to flush the eyes should something get in them can save and relieve your eyes. A bottle of eye wash solution is an easy way to be prepared. A pair of goggles or a small cup is an alternative way to wash the eyes out.

Antihistamines, tweezers and a good pair of scissors also come in handy when treating splinters, insect bites and wounds where you might have to cut through clothing. Aspirin and acetaminophen are helpful as well for relieving pain or in a heart attack situation. Plastic baggies help to keep items organized for easy access. Along with the usual assorted bandages and ointment these items are good to have in your first aid kit.
