Nursing Travel Employment Origins And Employment Prospects For The Future

The travel nursing industry developed in response to a nursing shortage inside the US and other countries as far back as the 1940's. The type of work requires nurses to work for a temporary or short term position at a place away from home. With the current severe shortage of nurses both within the US and around the world, the types of positions needing nursing travel are sure to be in high demand presently and for years to come.

Many health care professionals choose this type of work for a variety of different reasons. These reasons range from a higher base pay and numerous benefits to an opportunity for traveling to different places. Some see it as a better way to make a more profound impact on the world around them by doing something positive.

The work is usually contracted for a length of time ranging from 3 weeks all the way to 23. The average contract being around 13. When the contract is completed you are free to return home, or pursue another assignment. There are no truly long term comments or contracts. You may work as little or as much as you desire.

As a rule most travel nursing companies handle most of the paperwork involved with this process. They often will help arrange lodging if needed, or provide a stipend to help offset its cost. If lodging is provided it is often a furnished apartment, near the place of employment.

Because these jobs moving to another place to stay for a short period of time, traveling expenses are usually included as well. These generally cover the move from your home to the city of employment. Medical, dental and life insurance are included as a rule as well.

Because these are high demand positions not only do they pay well salary wise, they generally offer signing bonuses or completion bonuses of a few thousand dollars up to ten thousand dollars or more. With the ample opportunities available, there are positions in some of the best hospitals in the US and around the world. Most only require working 3 days a week. The remaining four days can be used for exploring or sightseeing. Family, friends and even pets can go with you.

Traveling nurses are needed in every part of the United States. From as far west as California, to as far east as Florida and Maine. They are needed in Alaska to the north and Hawaii to the south. They are also needed in other countries. There are positions in Europe in France and England, or Asia in Japan or China. They are needed in South America and the Middle East. Or there could be place in the city where you live now. There are just too many places to list.

There are an estimated 25,500 RNs working nursing travel jobs in the U. S. The number of LVN or LPN nurses is not known. Presently there are over 340 travel nurse companies in the US. There are also over 480 joint US and international travel companies. With a little thought and preparation this could be the job for you.
