EMS or Electronic Muscle Stimulators are devices that can be attached to the muscles of the body thereby activating them and preventing muscle atrophy. These devices allow the individual to lose a little weight while doing activities such as watching TV and talking on the phone. It uses a current that stimulates the muscles of the body leading to loss of weight, toning and definition. Athletes and celebrities have used these gadgets to look their best while attending to their hectic lifestyles.

The muscle stimulators can be used to supplement normal exercise routines especially on those days when an individual is very busy and is not able to go to the gym to work out. People who lead sedentary lifestyles or physically handicapped individuals could use the equipment as they can tone their muscles while in bed or watching TV.

The machines work by having an electrical current pass through the rubber pads that are wrapped around specific muscles. These muscles tighten when the electric current passes through them causing the muscles to exercise. This current has a low voltage that is meant to awaken the nerves in the brain that then send signals to the corresponding muscle which then contracts.

Researchers have found the electronic muscle stimulators apply different strengths of pressure to each muscle depending on its location, size and work. For instance, skeletal muscles hold the body together and are made of many fibers that operate at a slow pace. Therefore, to activate them, the stimulators use voltage at a low frequency.

Body builders have sworn that using the stimulators has helped their muscles grow faster than when compared to regular working out. The other reason as to why they love the stimulators is because after using them, they don't feel any soreness that is associated with the normal working out routine. This allows the individual to have control as to the amount of pain that they can feel after working out. This is why using EMS for people who have had surgery and want to keep fit can benefit from the machines.

The stimulators are usually kept in gyms and spas for patrons who are in a lot of pain due to fitness training. The effectiveness of these stimulators depends on the severity of the damaged muscle and the nerve endings that are associated with it. Even though these units cannot solely cause weight loss, they can help an individual deal with pain which enables them to heal sooner from soreness and then return to their routines.

Electronic muscle stimulators have not approved by the relevant government body that checks products before being used by consumers. EMS products have not shown any dramatic weight loss in individuals that use them. The concept that they are based on states that muscle that has not been used by an individual can be activated by the stimulators which then decreases atrophy.

The best way to use the EMS units is by combining with regular workouts. If one is very busy and cannot attend the gym, they can strap on the stimulators to keep the muscles active and avoid getting sore all over again when they resume their workout routine.
