Everyone likes to have a great smile. Having a great smile means showing beautiful teeth. In a perfect world, this would not be a problem because we would all have smiles like models. Because we do not live in a perfect world, we rely on seeing a cosmetic dentist for our dental needs when we want to look perfect.

It is usually recommended that people visit the dentist every 6 months for a dental check-up. An oral examination is a basic examination where the dentist checks on the general oral health of the mouth: the teeth, the gums, and the bone structure. X-rays are taken to help assess the health of the bone structure.

If the dentist finds any dental irregularities in the mouth, a recommendation is suggested and the patient decides to act on the suggestion. This can be governed by the cost of the procedure and the necessity of it as well as whether the procedure is covered by the patient's health insurance.

If the procedure is not basic, then the recommendation by the dentist is merely one of cosmetic enhancement. Sometimes the client makes the decision for the cosmetic treatment. Examples of the more common procedures may include tooth-whitening, veneers, tooth-colored fillings, night guards and braces(silver or invisible).

Tooth-whitening is usually requested by heavy smokers. The nicotine from the cigarette or cigar tends to stain the tooth enamel after a while. Excessive drinkers of red wine can also show stained tooth enamel over time. Veneers are also considered a cosmetic procedure. This is when the tooth enamel of the patient's tooth is too heavily stained and tooth-whitening might erode the enamel too much and increase the sensitivity of the tooth. It is then at the discretion of the dentist to consider getting veneers. This is simply a thin cover over the original tooth.

Another common dental procedure is fixing a cavity with tooth-colored fillings versus silver-colored fillings. The silver fillings are more traditional and stronger and will withstand the constant bite of teeth against each other. The tooth-colored fillings are strong but not as lasting as the silver ones. However, patients like to have the tooth-colored fillings fixing their cavities so that their teeth will all look naturally similar in colour.

Sometimes, patients teeth appear to be flat all the way around instead of having natural groves on each tooth. This might be due to a common dental issue called tooth-grinding. This is when the patient grinds the teeth while sleeping. In order to rectify this problem, night guards are usually recommended to be used for a few months until the grinding stops and the erosion of the tooth enamel is reduced.

Braces are also a common dental procedure. They help to straighten the teeth or help them to be properly aligned in one's mouth. Traditionally, braces were usually silver and very obvious once the patient smiled. With the advent of technology, there are now invisible braces which don't show as obviously as before. Braces are worn by patients of every age.
