Antibiotics are a favorite solution to so many problems. A little help for the immune system to clear out any bacteria and infection is always great, but it is not the perfect solution for everything. In fact, if there is need for a long term treatment involving antibiotics there is something else a person should take.

Antibiotics are not selective; they will help destroy all bacteria in a body, including the necessary bacteria in the stomach and liver. This does not need to be the case, though. Just like antibiotics give the immune system a little boost, a probiotic supplement gives the digestive system a little push. When taking an antibiotic, a probiotics keep the natural, necessary bacteria alive.

Probiotic supplement pills are available in most grocery or health food stores, but the physician prescribing an antibiotic should have a better suggestion for the right probiotic to match it. Not all antibiotics are the same, and not all probiotics are the same, so ask a physician's opinion on which one to get.

Supplements are not the only source of probiotics to consider. Probiotics are living, and are not always best taken in a pill form. Alternatives are still not as tasty as, say, ice cream, but it may be easier to take, and they often contain many cultures and enhance the body's natural system as well as maintain what an antibiotic can destroy. These alternatives are certain dairy products, the most easily accessible is yogurt. There are many kinds of yogurt available, and most advertise on the label how many probiotic cultures are in their yogurt. A probiotic supplement is good, but adding yogurt makes probiotics tastier.

A second kind, which has almost one hundred times the number of bacteria cultures is kefir, a yogurt like dairy substance. This one does not taste good on its own, but with fruit or chocolate, kefir makes a tasty slushy. Kefir does take more work than yogurt, but in the long run it is less expensive than yogurt. Kefir is pretty simple to take care of, though, it just has to have the seeds strained out, the kefir (without seeds) eaten every day and new milk poured in with the kefir seeds every day, the kefir will never run out.

So, antibiotics are good, but pair them with the right probiotic; taking supplements, eating a helping of yogurt or kefir every day will help keep you very healthy body
