Dry mouth relief happens after finding the cause for the condition. This problem is known as xerostomia. It is caused because of being a side effect from a serious medical condition or dehydration. Saliva is necessary for talking, chewing, cleaning the mouth and swallowing. Lack of saliva can cause discomfort and develop into other conditions like gum disease.

It is common for suffers to drink excessive amounts of soda, juices and coffee. They are diuretics, which causes dryness in the lips and body. An alternative to drinking soda is green tea. Green tea has active ingredients that can stimulate salivary glands. It also has many health benefits and a good natural treatment. This condition will improve by drinking more water.

Food has a major effect on the human body. Eating foods with higher water content can help with staying hydrated. Examples are gravy, celery, broths, yogurt and soups. There are also foods that cause the body to lose water, which you want to avoid. Choose foods that cause the body to make more tears, sweat and saliva. Food examples for water production are cayenne peppers and spicy foods.

Smoking and chewing tobacco are bad habits that cause lip dryness and could lead to serious health conditions. To get relief, you want to immediately stop using tobacco products. The way a person breath is another concern. People usually breathe out of their nose which may cause dryness in the mouth. The behavior is corrected by breathing through the nose during the day and while sleeping.

It is common for the mouth and eyes to become dry through the duration of the night. Using a vaporizer in the room while sleeping can improve the problem. It provides relief by adding moisture to the air.

Bad breath can happen when the body is not producing enough saliva. This tends to lead to using more mouthwash. Alcohol is one of the main ingredients in mouthwash, which will only irritate the symptoms. The condition is improved by finding a mouthwash without alcohol or not using as much of it.

A steam treatment can provide instant relief and lead to more saliva coming from the glands. This method adds moisture to the outside of the body and involves breathing it into the body. The treatment is done with a steamer or by boiling water on the stove. If you do not have access to a steamer, then you can place a towel over the head and sit in a safe place. Placing the face in front of the pot will allow the steam to surround the face.

Artificial saliva substitutes are an option after trying several treatment methods. They are available at the local drugstore. Moisturizing toothpaste can help with restoring moisture in the mouth as well. If you are not seeing improvements after different treatments, then you will need to make an appointment with the family doctor in order to find a diagnosis for the problem. It is important to not let the condition to go untreated because of the possibility of being a sign of a severe medical condition. The doctor can help with finding the best treatment to give dry mouth relief.
