Those recently diagnosed with cervical, or any other type of gynecological cancer, will need to find a gynecologic oncologist. The sooner treatment is sought; the better the chances are of curing the cancer and saving one's fertility. A gynecologic oncologist in Chattanooga is not too hard to find. Once the right specialist is found, an interview and research process should commence in order to determine treatment plans and insurance coverage.

1. Referral & Recommendations
An OBGYN will be the best resource for finding the proper specialist to seek treatment from. Based on the type of cancer, and treatment needed, he or she will offer a referral to a local colleague in order to perform the actual treatment plan. Contacting one's individual medical insurance company to ensure the specialist is covered on their plan is the first place to start. If insurance doesn't cover the particular practice, heading back to the original OBGYN to ask for additional referrals, or starting fresh by asking friends, family, co-workers and neighbors for recommendations, is in order. Online research is also a good option but will require more time and effort for checking credentials.

2. Book Meet & Greet Appointments
Once a shortlist of gynecologic oncologists that are covered by insurance is compiled, it's recommended that a Meet & Greet appointment be booked. These are usually free and offer the opportunity to meet the doctor, and his or her staff, prior to starting treatments. This appointment will help determine one's comfort level with the staff, nurses, and the doctor himself. Consider the following: Are they welcoming and accommodating? Does the doctor seem knowledgeable and take the time to listen to, and answer, questions and concerns? The answers to these questions will help make the final decision easier.

3. Ask Questions
Ask about the treatment plan recommended for the type of cancer being treated. Not all treatments are right for every individual, so it's important to understand what is involved before moving forward. Do they offer the most updated treatment plans for the type of cancer? Will surgery be needed or just chemotherapy and radiation? Inquire as to what the worst case scenario is and make sure to ask specific questions in regards to fertility, and how to protect it.

Once the decision is made and treatment has begun, it's recommended that support from a local survivor group be sought. Cancer survivor support groups offer a wonderful opportunity for helping people learn how to cope during the treatment process. Find a local support group by asking a gynecologic oncologist for a referral.
