If you have been concerned about aging parents, then you probably have considered the option of retirement homes. This is a place where retired folks are living in supervised communities in which they receive many services and support. They will offer their clients a variety of amenities and assistance with normal daily living activities.
The independent living home will provide personal care by highly trained staff, and can also arrange visits with doctors and nurses. Many of these facilities are located in more rural communities which is away from traffic and noise. It is somewhat different from a nursing home which requires constant care for the patient. Residents in the senior home will also be provided medical and dental care services when necessary. They could also select their personal medical practitioner or dentist according to their preferences. Retirees who become ill or have had surgeries will receive care during their recuperation period.
Most of these centers are designed with keeping in mind the needs of disabled and elderly people. The bathrooms and kitchens typically are designed in ways so that they are both wheelchair and walker friendly. In order to accommodate wheelchairs, most will have spacious hallways along with doors. Shower areas are generally built with extra railings for the senior to hold onto as a form of protection against slipping and falling.
Seniors will find that there are many activities included each day. Most have recreational areas or gymnasiums, and many will have instructors offering classes on fitness and exercise. There are also outside activities which are scheduled regularly which may include bowling, sightseeing excursions, movies and dining out in groups. There is a sense of camaraderie and friendship among the participants living in these types of facilities.
There is no question that moving to an assisted living community will be a big change in someone's life. Therefore, it is recommended to be informed as possible regarding the types of services which will be provided and the different fees involved. Some will offer a complete care package, while others may charge depending on which services that the client will be needing. Additionally, the facility should have a medical practitioner who is there at all times.
Finally, when looking at different retirement homes, pay close attention to any social or recreational opportunities which they have available for their residents. They should have fun activities including group outings and dining opportunities. Many will allow potential clients to take a tour to ensure that the facility will be a good match for your loved one.
