Exercise equipment is one of the most underutilized pieces of equipment in the average home. Or, if it is used on a regular basis, it might be as a clothes rack or a storage device rather than for its intended purpose. But just because statistics show that most treadmills are unused and forgotten shortly after purchase, doesn't mean yours has to be that way.
Put exercise into your schedule. Decide what times work best for you, and then stick with them. If you plan to just exercise whenever you have time, you will likely find that you never do. Excuses don't work as well when you find yourself at the start of a half-hour dedicated to exercise, and making something part of your routine makes it become habit more quickly.
A lot of people find success positioning their treadmill in front of the television. For people who watch TV regularly, this can be a great motivation, especially if you remove all other furniture from in front of the television. Obviously, this plan must be adjusted if the television is shared, but it can be a good way to force yourself to use your treadmill.
Put together a selection of upbeat songs that make your feel energetic on your mp3 player, computer, or stereo. Books on tape can make a good alternative for people who would rather not listen to music, or who get bored while exercising. Reading a regular book is perfectly possible while walking, but more difficult or even impossible for joggers.
Rewards systems can work, but they do require some will-power to stick with them. Promising yourself a new piece of clothing, CD, or day on the golf range after a period of time or the successful completion of a certain number of hours is a good idea, but only if you can actually hold out until then. However, recording your progress is always a good idea.
One good way to get a little outside pressure on yourself is to just inform everyone that you know that you are embarking on an exercise program. This way, you can use the often-dangerous peer pressure for good, as you won't want to have to admit that you've been slacking off when someone asks you how its going.
Registering for a race, charity walk, or other event can also be a good way to stay on track. It can serve as a goal that you are working towards, and it can also help you stay motivated because you don't want to disappoint the organizers of the event, the charity, etc. Signing up with a friend is even better, so that you can work towards it together.
Just being aware that most treadmills wind up being used as coat racks is a good step towards not letting yours become one of them. But it takes more than just the knowledge of the potential problem, to avoid it. Keep track of your exercise sessions, and try to use rewards and scheduling to make exercise a habit and a beneficial presence in your life.
