Being even just a few pounds overweight can have implications on one's health. Although diabetes and some of the more publicized health effects of weight gain are more commonly associated with obesity, even a few extra pounds of fat on the body can place additional strains on a person's heart and respiratory system. This means that making the choice to lose weight and improve your level of fitness is usually a good thing. To aid in this process, there are gyms and other services that can help with weight loss in Jacksonville, FL.

On the path to dropping a dress size, or helping one's belt feel looser, many people attempt to design a weight loss regime. This is an important first step, as it can help a person stay motivated and ensure that they remain on the right track to achieving their fitness goals.

The issue with designing a fitness regime, however, is that there is such a range of complex information on the internet, and elsewhere, that it is easy for a novice to become overwhelmed.

In its simplest form, all a person must do if they wish to reduce their body mass is to consume less calories each day than they require. The process behind this is simple. Fat is just the body's way of storing energy for long term use.

The problem with this method of storing energy is that when a person continues to eat enough (or too many) calories each day, then the body has no reason to dip into its fat reserves. This means that the fat layer will stay static and visible on a person's body, or in many cases will grow a little each day.

By reducing one's calorie intake such that the body has an energy deficit, it will be forced by necessity to start burning its fat reserves. There are two main ways to achieve this deficit, which have been preached by health professionals for many years: Diet and exercise.

The diet part is simple. By reducing one's calorie intake, the deficit will be created. The amount that a person will need to reduce their intake by can differ from person to person. However, around 500 calories per day is generally a healthy amount. By dropping too many calories from the diet at once, the body's metabolism will slow; this is counterproductive, and is one of the reasons why crash dieting is a bad idea.

Exercise does two things. It actually takes energy that the body would otherwise use on other things (again increasing this calorie deficit slightly) and also regular exercise helps to increase a person's metabolism. A faster metabolism means that a person will burn more energy even whilst at rest, meaning that regular exercise will help a person drop the pounds significantly more than dieting alone.

Maintaining sufficient motivation to continue with a strict diet and exercise schedule can be tough. This is why there are services to help with weight loss in Jacksonville, FL.
