A dentist is an important person in an individual's life as they offer guidance on how to care for teeth. They advise their customers to always brush after every meal, what foods to avoid if they want healthy teeth and recommend flossing to take out food particles. If one has an infection, cavity or in need of an implant, the dentist performs these procedures in order to restore normalcy to the person. They don't like taking out teeth as it can affect the alignment of the remaining set. If they can avoid and perform other procedures such as root canals, then they do them.

They may give prescriptions to their patients after performing root canals or extractions. If one wants to have their gap filled, then they mimics the extracted tooth by curving on dentures and implanting them in the space between the teeth. If the problem tooth is close to a nerve that affects sight, then they may refer the individual to an oral surgeon.

The teeth have connections to blood vessels and therefore when working on them, a dentist has to wear gloves and masks in order to avoid transmitting or getting infected. They use complicated tools in their line of work such as forceps, mirrors and tweezers. These have to be sterilized when not in use to kills germs and avoid infection.

Some of them have their own private offices where they manage the day to day activities in addition to treating their patients. They may oversee cutting of checks, hiring, ordering supplies and even interviewing assistants such as hygienists and receptionists. They are also responsible for reporting income and taxes to the relevant authorities.

The majority of the workforce which are baby boomers are retiring and therefore many opportunities will be available. In addition, the aging population will have dental problems that will need to be addressed and worked on.This means individuals who are in the profession will have secure jobs despite of the economy.

In order to become a dentist, one has to pass a written and practical examination and these differ according to the state one intends to practice in. If the student passes, then they become licensed and can start working on patients.

The dentist keeps images of individuals with different color shades as a guide for those people who want their teeth whitened. The ingredients used in bleaches and creams used in whitening are strong and can eat away at the enamel. Therefore bleaching should be done only once or twice in a year.

Sometimes, teeth whitening techniques do not take out stains and in such a case, veneers may be used as they cover the stains and exhibit a white clear smile. If teeth are not cleaned professionally, then cavities and bad breath may develop. This is because food particles can take residence deep between the teeth and cannot be taken out by normal brushing. This is why it is essential for one to visit a dentist to have their teeth cleaned at least twice a year.
