The concept and adaptation of porcelain veneers in dental enhancements and reconstructive work is one of the newer procedures that have become extremely popular. The fact that it is a quick method to correct numerous dental problems and is painless has made it a preferred choice with many cosmetic oral surgeons and their patients.

In one aspect they have completely changed the way that misaligned teeth are corrected. The metal braces that have blighted many a teenager's life and had to be worn for lengthy periods have been replaced by porcelain veneers. These thin layers of porcelain can be used to correct skew teeth and leave the entire tooth line beautifully straight after only two consultations.

Veneers are also known as porcelain laminates and fronts. These laminates are wafer thin and custom made to fit individual teeth. However a person should not be misled by their thinness. Laminates are hardy and strong and once bonded to tooth enamel are long lasting. If they are cared for, kept clean and flossed regularly they will serve one well for many a year.

Their greatest advantage however is the fact that the material closely resembles natural teeth and laminates also have the luminosity that a person's own teeth have. They are further able to withstand staining from food substances such as red wine, coffee, tea and cigarette smoking. Their whiteness is not dimmed and a person is assured of a beautiful smile at all times.

There are however drawbacks. Some patients have found they needed time to get used to the size and shape of the veneers. Others have found that they developed denture sensitivity after their natural tooth enamel was shaved to make space for the veneer.

The pros do however far out weight the cons and the fact that veneers can be used in so many ways has led to a great public demand. The ease with which they are fitted and their strength makes them ideal for use in a variety of tooth makeover procedures Small dentures can be lengthened, size can be enlarged and color can be improved quickly using these painless procedures.

Before anything is decide a patient is required to undergo an extensive dental appraisal. Once that is done the dentist will determine a course of action. At the follow up visit the teeth that are to be corrected will be prepared. This entails the removal of a sliver of tooth enamel and a mold taken of each tooth to make a model for the dental laboratory to make the laminates from.

When the actual veneers are made the dentist uses special cement and heat lighting to bond the veneer to its tooth. The area around the veneer is cleaned to remove excess cement and the patient is left with a beautiful set of teeth in three consultations.

Unfortunately porcelain veneers are considered cosmetic and most medical insurances do not pay for this type of dental work. It is advisable that patients discuss the costing and method of payment with their dentists before any work is done.
