It is extremely important to educate ourselves on something as a whole before we use any drugs, especially if it something as important as cholesterol, which can turn out to be fatal if neglected. So, let us understand together what is cholesterol and how a cholesterol drug can save your life.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance found in our cells and blood stream as well. It is important for our body as it produces a number of hormones and some cell membrane therefore. Therefore, in order for our body to be healthy, we need cholesterol. At the same time too much of it can clog the arteries and cause coronary heart disease, which in turn can lead to heart attack.

Our body produces cholesterol but we also accumulate it through the intake of various food products such as: egg yolks, poultry, butter, cheese, whole milk and so on. There are two types of cholesterol and they are: low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is the bad cholesterol and high-density (HDL), which is the good cholesterol.

Of course it is the bad cholesterol we need to worry about and bring the levels down with cholesterol drugs.

What is the Right Level?

The right level of cholesterol is a maximum of 200 mg/dL (deci liter) or less and HDL of minimum 40mg/dL or more. Cholesterol is not calculated by body weight though if you are over weight you probably have high bad cholesterol level.

Which is the Right Drug for you?

There are a number of cholesterol drugs available on the market out of which some can be obtained over the counter. However you absolutely need to consult your doctor before you start taking any cholesterol medication.

Some cholesterol drugs can have serious side effects which is the long run may do you more harm than help improve your health; only your doctor can advise you which drug is best for you as he/she is the only one who knows your medical history and present state of health. Because you may also have to take more than one kind of cholesterol drug, this is why it is also so important that you seek medical advice, because you will need to know what type of cholesterol drug is right for you.

Other Helpful Tips

Your everyday life style can make a great difference in your cholesterol levels both good and bad therefore take a moment and understand what you can change today in order to have a better tomorrow. Eating healthy and exercising have always been the key to a healthy body and mind, find out what works best for you and start practicing right away.
