John Spencer Ellis wanted to help humanity on a wider level. Hence after serving humanity to attain their goals for 20 odd years and in this process studying on how to work towards this goal from different human perspectives, he came to the conclusion that the best way to send out his message was in the form of a featured documentary film.

It was not easy for John Spencer Ellis to take this decision of making a documentary film. His yearning to serve humanity to a larger extent and the big question asked to himself as to how can he do it helped him to reach this conclusion. He did it by pondering over this question for quiet some time in the Orange country of California where he lived.

Now the next question was "What would be the contents of the movie?" And "What shall he call it?" At one of the training programs at John's corporate offices, he told his students about this desire to make a movie, through which he could put his ideas forward and in the process help the world too. Many good suggestions came in for the title from different students. Finally after some time somebody suggested the name "The Compass" and everybody in the room agreed that there can be no better name for the movie. So the movie was to be called "The Compass", since it was a movie aimed at helping people to achieve their real goals and motives in life.

The next biggest challenge was to give it a worldwide appeal and see to it that the movie does not hurt any religious beliefs. Along with this it should be able to motivate, inspire and help people to achieve their goals in a very simple, practical and straight-forward manner.

The next question John put forth to his friends was Who was needed to make this movie a success? And also he started searching his bookshelves to find the answer to the questions as to who has guided him, motivated him, inspired him etc to take up this task as his profession. The task of reaching out to people to reach their goals, which many times they fail to achieve, due to the lack of the right motivation or guidance. So John started jotting down the names of all the people who had helped him to take upon himself this noble task of helping people accomplish their dreams b way of helping them to achieve their goals. He knew that unless people achieved their goals, they couldn't see their dreams coming true, since every person wants to be successful in life.

The next thing required for the movie was an appeal which lasted for ever. The theme itself was the primary focus of course, but John didn't want it to become a movie, which people saw and forgot.

Hence John sought a co-author and in the spring of 2008 was finally able to find one in the form of Tammy Kling and came out with a transformational novel, which focused on the author's or lead character's different life changing experiences, world-wide travel, adventures etc., which was to form the main storyline of the movie too.
