Low sperm count is one of the major causes of infertility in men. Also known as oligospermia, this condition has caused many problems for men that are eager to start a family. Sperm count usually needs to be high in order for the woman to be fertilized and that means having about 20 million sperm for each milliliter of semen. Although it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg, the odds are very low of that one sperm reaching the egg if the sperm count is very low. A physician's approach will involve initial testing to determine which course of action should come next for the treatment of low sperm count.

The first thing that will occur is called a sperm survival test. A test sample of semen and sperm are taken and put in special conditions for twenty-four hours. After this time it is checked to see how many sperm are still alive. The results are based on how many sperm are still motile and if there are more than 3 million per milliliter then that is considered a good result.

Intrauterine insemination is performed when sperm count is just slightly decreased and it is usually tried for four cycles of the woman. The sperm is inserted directly into the female, and if after four cycles it did not work then it is on to the next treatment.

In vitro fertilization involves taking the sperm and egg and incubating it outside of the womb for at least eighteen hours. During this time it is watched to see whether fertilization takes place. If it does take place then chances for pregnancy are quite high.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is used when in vitro fertilization did not work or there is a very low sperm count. This involves directly injecting a sperm into the egg and then placing the egg in special conditions for approximately 48 hours. This method allows any man, no matter how low his sperm count is, to be able to father a child in most cases.

The problem with all of the above methods is that they take time and money. It can take years for all of these methods to be tried and tested, and with the high cost of doctors and the long waiting times it can get very frustrating for the average couple that just wants to have some children.

An alternative that is worth looking at is natural herbal products that have allowed many men to produce more sperm resulting in positive fertilization and getting their partner pregnant. It has worked for many men and there is nothing to lose because there are no side effects associated with it because it is all-natural. You can take a look at this and see if it's something that you would like to try, while you are between appointments and waiting for test results.
