We hear "ADHD" and most of the time, we're not entirely sure if we actually know what it is. Here are some ADHD facts that may help us understand it better:

What is ADHD? Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or more popularly known as ADHD, is a developmental disorder characterized by hyperactivity, impulsiveness and inattention or the inability to stay focused for a long period of time. It is normally exhibited among young children.

ADHD is first noticed during childhood, around the toddler years. Around 2 million children have this disorder, and boys are more likely to have it than girls.

We would think that ADHD has been with us since time immemorial. ADHD developed through times, evolving with varying names. Some of the former names of ADHD include: Hyperkinesis, Brain Damaged Syndrome, Minimal Brain Dysfunction (MBD), Hyperkinetic Impulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder. It was only until the late 90s when the name Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was given to it.

Causes of ADHD
The exact cause of AHDH is still unknown. Some would say it is genetic and brain-based. It is said that children with ADHD have low levels of a brain chemical called dopamine. When using PET scanners, it can be seen that brain metabolism of kids with ADHD is lower in terms of the areas of the brain where it controls social judgment, movement and control.

Diagnosing ADHD
Never assume that your child has ADHD. It is best to leave the diagnosis to the experts, meaning, a pediatrician, a child psychiatrist or qualified mental health professional should do it for you. They will, of course, interrogate the parents and check their family history. Certain tests may also be administered to the children to back up the initial findings. What is evaluated on these tests mostly revolve around physical, neurological and psychological wellness.

Treating ADHD Addressing ADHD should first come from the support of family and friends. Parents can never do it alone. They would always need the help and love of others.

Upon diagnosis of ADHD, certain treatment and therapy will be given by your physician. These treatments and therapies are normally based on the child's age, the extent of the symptoms, tolerance for medication and procedures, and your expectations.

Medicines are also an option in the treatment of ADHD. Psychostimulants such as methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine have been used to treat child behavior problems since the early 1930s. These take effect in the body quickly but they also leave the body quickly. Like all medicines, they may or may not have side effects, depending on how it reacts to your child's body.

Using natural herbal remedies are a new way on treating ADHD. These homeopathic remedies are becoming more popular because of the use of herbs and plant extracts. Of course, we have to be mindful of the ingredients in these products. Some of these that are known to reduce restlessness, over-excitability, constant stimulation, reduce temper tantrums, and sooth nerves are Hyoscyamus, Tuberculinum, Arsen iod and Verta alb.

These ADHD facts have helped us understand the disorder better, now let's unravel the benefits of this 100% homeopathic, safe and natural remedy, hyperactivity, distracting and impulsiveness.
