Hyperbaric oxygen therapy which literally means "high pressure" like a lot of modern inventions has been viewed as new and controversial but the fact is, it is really not that new. The concept of a hyperbaric treatment has already been in existence since as early as 1662. But it was first clinically used during the mid 1800s. It was the U.S. Military after World War I who were the first to test and develop hyperbaric chambers. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was then first used safely on sea divers to treat their decompression sickness. Then in 1950, a lot of clinical trials were held that uncovered the benefits of hyperbaric chambers and paved the way for more contemporary applications in the clinical setting.
Now, hyperbaric chamber is already U.S. FDA approved and proven to treat a lot of illnesses such as autism, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, stroke, head injuries, Alzheimer's disease and Crohn's disease. Now, hyperbaric chambers can be personally administered at home or the office without any medical supervision. Hyperbaric chambers are now available for sale and for rent and come in two sizes, the single and the double bag. The single bag can be operated solo and fits only one person. The double bag, on the other hand, needs to be operated by two people and fits two people.
Chelation therapy was first known when the father of modern biochemistry, Alfred Werner develops the theory of coordination compounds or chelates in 1893. This was a turning point in reclassifying inorganic compounds and Alfred Werner received the Nobel Prize in 1913. In the 1920s, Chelation therapy then became very important as industrial production developed. Industrial materials such as paints needed elimination of heavy metal contamination in order for these to be sold in the world market. At first, citric acid was initially used to eliminate heavy metals, but the Germany developed its own chelating agent, this was EDTA.
Chelation therapy was then used during the first world war by the British to treat soldiers that were exposed to arsenic based poison gas, which was used indiscriminately during that war. Then it was also used during the second world war on navy personnel who were exposed to lead poisoning from the paint on navy vessels. EDTA was the chelating agent used.
Now, chelation therapy is U.S FDA approved and used to treat heavy metal toxicity such as lead poisoning, hypercalcaemia, and ventricular fibrillation. It has also been reported to treat heart disease, autism, osteoarthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, organic poisoning, diabetes, and macular degeneration.
