Complications Arising From Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is an insulin resistance your body develops. Under normal circumstances, your body will absorb sugar from the foods and drinks you consume. To help manage the rate of absorption as well as your glucose levels, your pancreas produces insulin. If your pancreas cannot produce enough of it, or you develop a resistance to it, the sugar that would ordinarily be absorbed remains within your bloodstream. When this happens, a number of physiological complications can manifest.

The disease is incurable, though it can be managed. Below, we'll explore how it can lead to physical problems both in the short-term and long-term. We'll also describe a few things you can - and should - do to control the condition.

Problems That Develop Quickly

Hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose levels - will be a constant concern. It can happen as a result of eating too large a meal, not taking the proper medications, or even getting sick. Keep a watchful eye on your levels; if you neglect to regulate them, you may start to feel weak or lose consciousness.

Hypoglycemia happens when your blood glucose level drops too low. Neglecting to eat throughout the day or overexerting yourself can cause this to happen and lead to dizziness, nausea, or profuse sweating. If you fail to raise your blood glucose level, it can even lead to slurring in your speech.

Long-Term Problems

As serious as hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia can become, the long-term problems that manifest from type 2 diabetes can be potentially life-threatening. For example, diabetics are significantly more susceptible to developing heart disease and high blood pressure. Plus, they are exposed to an increased risk of enduring a heart attack or stroke due to cardiovascular issues.

Type 2 diabetes can also damage the kidneys (a condition known as nephropathy). Your kidneys play an important role in filtering waste material from your blood. Because type 2 diabetes allows excess glucose to collect within the bloodstream, kidney disease can develop. If that happens, your kidneys can fail or require dialysis.

Other debilitating problems can manifest, including nerve damage, osteoporosis, and glaucoma. These complications grow more severe over time which is why early diagnosis and ongoing life maintenance is critical.

Taking An Active Role

From the moment your doctor diagnoses type 2 diabetes, you must monitor your blood glucose levels each day. If they spike or drop, you'll need to immediately bring them back into balance them to avoid the problems described above. Beyond monitoring your levels, you should also maintain a daily exercise regimen and eat healthy foods. By doing so, you can help your body regulate the glucose in your blood.

Living with this disease requires a careful examination of your lifestyle. By making small changes, you can prevent its short-term and long-term complications from manifesting. Speak with your doctor about the preventative steps and lifestyle changes you should make in order to control this disorder.
