Staph infections are an ever-increasing problem, due to new strains that make it more difficult to treat. The staph infections are capable of becoming dangerous, and can even be life-threatening in certain cases. A majority of staph infections that do happen, generally occur in humans that are either young, or elderly. Until recently, staph has not been much of a problem, and it was not seen as much of a health risk. This is due to staph's lack of resistance to antibiotics such as penicillin, and over time it has developed a resistance to it. Staph's resistance to antibiotics is ever-increasing, making it more and more difficult to treat. This resistance from antibiotics is making staph's irritating infections harder to treat, which is why staph should always be taken seriously.
Staph has a variety of symptoms, but should not be confused with infections that can be caused by allergic reactions and bug bits, etc. Symptoms can include cellulitis, which is the swelling of the skin, follucilitis, which is the swelling or inflammation of one or more hair follicles, boils, which are accumulations of pus that swells, styes, which are eye infections, and even impetigo, which is a bacterial skin infection. It is important to understand that these noted are not all of the symptoms that staph can produce. So if you feel that symptoms that you may be having are because of staph, it is always best to consult your local medical practitioner.
Staph bacterium are generally located in the nose, and on the skin. The location of staph bacteria make it easy to spread, which is the reason why it is best to always practice proper hygiene. Staph is contracted when it enters an opening of the skin, such as a cut. It is also important to take necessary precautions and keep wounds clean, as to avoid any complications that may arise due to a staph infection.
Risks of staph vary, because no two people are the same. Actions that can increase the risk of contracting staph can include playing contact sports, any recent or current hospitalization, any use of medical tools and instruments, and even antibiotics. Risks of staph infection can also increase due to your age, such as if you are old or young, or if you have residence in a crowded place, or somewhere that has unsanitary living conditions.
If you notice or feel that you have a staph infection, such as a sore or boil on the skin, most likely it will become worse with time. If staph is the cause of the skin irritation, it is always the best idea to seek attention, or take action as to ensure the infection does not become serious, or life threatening.
