You have likely heard how certain foods such as blueberries and red wine called a "superfood" - foods that act as natural cures for many different diseases. When you know more about the amazing nutrients contained within those in the superfood category, it's easy to understand how this grandiose name originated! These foods are full of antioxidants and other nutrients that act as natural medications for your entire body.

What Are Antioxidants?

The best way to define antioxidants is to define what they do. When we eat, breathe in pollutants, expose our skin to the sun, or otherwise expose ourselves to contaminants, we take in harmful free radicals. These little molecules attack a variety of cells in the body include those in our skin, organs, and bodily systems. They reduce their productivity, damage tissue, and slow down the ability of regular cells to regenerate. Once this happens, we often begin to feel ill, or contract a disease.

The only thing that stops free radicals from harming cells are antioxidants. These molecules are drawn to free radicals and either neutralize them, repair the damage they left behind, or act like a messenger to bring more of these fighters into a particular area to battle disease and illness.

What Aliments Does Antioxidant Superfood Prevent?

Perhaps the biggest benefit to consuming antioxidants is the prevention of disease. These substances act as natural cures for several devastating diseases including various forms of cancer. Illnesses such as colds and the flu are also treated and prevented with an increased intake of these substances.

These nutrients play a large role in keeping us feeling and looking younger. When free radicals attack our skin, they slow down the regeneration process and allow the collagen under the skin's surface to get brittle with age. This leaves our interior and exterior looking old and haggard. Our energy levels also suffer greatly without a sufficient level of antioxidants.

Where To Find Antioxidant Foods

There are many types of superfood choices available that work to increase your level of antioxidants. As previously mentioned, blueberries and other berries are one of the richest sources available. Broccoli and tomatoes are also great sources. For variety, red grapes, spinach, garlic, and carrots are a wonderful addition to many different meals. As the base, switching white bread and milk with whole grain varieties and soy products can improve your antioxidant and vitamin intake.

If you still lack antioxidants, there are teas you can drink and supplements you can take to gain the benefits of these antioxidants. Spirulina is a plant that is made available as a supplement. Other multivitamins do contain antioxidants, but not in the quantities found in superfood, and rarely in its natural form.

With all of the important roles antioxidants play, superfood plays a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. If you consume enough of these nutrients, they act as natural cures for a full range of internal and external complications leaving you looking and feeling better than ever before.
