No specific reasons have been given on this finding. I guess even with ADHD itself despite the numerous studies that are done on this subject.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder wherein children are seen to possess hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity. Boys are more likely to have ADHD than girls.
Even if there are no proven causes of ADHD, there are some factors that were being considered: genetics (yes blame mom and dad), poor eating habits (blame advertisements and commercials), big emotional problems (blame the environment), and poor parenting (poor mom and dad, always to be blamed).
But is there ever any relationship between Attention Deficit Disorder and television?
It is said that watching too much TV can result to obesity, violent behavior and inattention. Let's explore them one by one.
- Obesity. Because of commercials of sumptuous food of all sorts, whether it's a fast food restaurant or products available in the grocery, it gives kids the idea (and the purchase power through their parents) that they can be easily bought. Since parents want to please their kids, of course parents would give in to the plea and buy them. Sure it won't hurt to have a taste of these wonderful food products, but, the negative implications come when kids become addicted to it. It may result in loss of appetite and the feeling that the child is full. Most of these irresistible foods do not have the nutrients kids need to be healthy. If they eat more, they grow more in terms of physical size, but do not grow healthier.
- Violent Behavior. Cartoon has already evolved from being entertaining to being brutal and violent. Kids have become overly obsessed with being able to fight the villains using high tech gadgets and guns, expert fighting moves and powers of all sorts. In return, they would think this is normal since they see it on TV and do it with siblings and friends. Violence is instilled in the young minds because TV dictates it to be ok.
- Inattention. In a study done to see the relationship between ADD and TV, it is found that when a child watches TV for an hour, it increases the risk of attention problems by almost 10%. This is based on kids aged 7. The variety of TV shows available (especially if you have cable TV) would result to your kids being more focused on TV and less focused on studies and his surroundings. Your kid would be glued in front of your TV screen, would not hear when you call for snack time or meal time, or if you need an errand to be done.
There are also recommendations that kids below 2 years old should not be allowed to watch television because it affects brain growth and the development of personality skills. Experts also say that we should set limits on watching television and exert caution as there are some shows and commercials that may be too much to be handled by young kids (like sexy commercials or violent shows).
When ADD becomes an issue, we need to address properly. One should see your pediatrician, understand the situation and deal with your child as patiently as possible and research for natural treatments.
Now where did the research for natural treatments come from?
Well-being and going the natural way is a continuous buzz in the market. And ADHD supplements should be no different. If we find an alternative that's 100% homeopathic, safe and effective, wouldn't you opt for that instead of the usual stimulants given by your doctors that are subject to side effects? And kids would definitely trade their icky medicine for a small, pleasant-tasting tablet that they can actually chew or melt in their mouth, like m&ms!
Bear in mind that these natural remedies should also contain herbs and plant extracts known to reduce restlessness, over-excitability, constant stimulation, reduce temper tantrums, and sooth nerves. Examples of these are Hyoscyamus, Tuberculinum, Arsen iod and Verta alb. Who could ask for anything more?
