Along time ago there was a real gold rush with literally thousands of people trying their luck at striking it rich with mining and panning gold in the west. Well, that was a long time ago and now there is a new rush that will soon sweep the nation. With the population more than one hundred times what it was in those days, there are more cigarette smokers than ever. The price of a pack of cigarettes just continue to rise, but that does not seem to make people quit.
The rate that cigarettes are charging up the scale, it would seem that more people would be quitting for their health. The jump in price that has taken place on cigarettes over the last ten years is about two hundred percent and that should be enough incentive to make anyone want to stop. If you have had stock in tobacco companies over the last ten years or so the profit from the investment should have been enormous. The question has got to be, why there is such an increase in price when there is already such a market for this product. One reason they say that the prices are going up is to try a different method of persuasion to help people stop smoking because of the tremendous rise in health care costs for those who smoke cigarettes.
Not long ago, there was a special about farmers not wanting to grow food on their land anymore, but was now changing over to tobacco instead of things like corn, peas and all the vegetables that are needed for nutrition on a daily basis. This is crazy because people definitely need vegetables much more than tobacco. If smokers would begin to concentrate on their health and replace cigarettes with more of the proper foods they need, farmers should be able to make up what they lose in tobacco by growing more vegetables.
Even though farmers would lose money if they no longer grew tobacco, you would think the solution would simply be to grow something else. AS long as tobacco is still grown and turned into cigarettes, the chances that everyone will stop smoking is slim no matter how steep the cost gets. The government must remember that cigarette smokers are akin to drug addicts in that they can not stop easily. Drug addicts have to pay a huge price for there drugs, but that rarely stops them from buying them, they just find other ways to pay for their habit. Whatever extra money is made from an increase in the cost and the tax on cigarettes, definitely should be spent to create more programs and free assistance for those who want to quit smoking. The medications and over the counter aids to help people stop smoking are quite expensive. If these products were cheaper or given freely to smokers, they might be more inclined to stop.
