Mold can be good and it can be bad. Mold gets a bad rap when it is found in our foods, in our homes, or in places where it should not be, but it is an essential part of the natural cycle of life. Mold helps to decompose organic materials, such as leaves, trees, dead animals, and vegetation, and returns it to the earth. So it is okay to find mold in a natural setting, but when you see mold growing inside your home, make sure you get rid of it immediately.
It is imperative that the mold growth and the source of the mold is eliminated immediately because the mold can actually cause serious harm to your health and the well-being of your home. Mold that is left untreated and left to grow and colonize has different effects on people, but the end result is never good. In addition to the mold affecting your health, mold can grow and eat away at drywall, wood, wallpaper, paper and paper products, and textiles. Leaving mold to grow will compromise the structure of your home and can actually cause floors and walls to collapse.
Mold exposure will vary with each individual and while some people living in a home with minor mold growth will never have any symptoms, others will start reacting from the very minute mold starts growing. Some of the more common symptoms of mold exposure are asthma, wheezing, shortness in breath, a runny nose, red, itchy, or watery eyes, coughing, and sneezing. Other more serious symptoms to mold exposure include bladder pain, dark or painful urine, memory loss, depression, nausea and chronic fatigue, cancer, and even death. Note that some people will not feel all of the symptoms mentioned and might only feel one or two symptoms while others may experience a bombardment of ailments.
Fungal disease is classified into four different categories:
1. Mycotoxicosis that is caused by contaminated food products.
2. Systemic infection of mycotoxicosis, which results in the more serious symptoms listed above.
3. Hypersensitivity that is caused by an allergic reaction to the mold spores.
4. Mycetismus that is caused by ingestion of a preformed toxin.
If you notice that you can breathe easier and feel better when you are not at your home or business, then your property could be infected with some form of mold growth. If you are showing any symptoms of mold exposure or if you are experiencing ailments that you normally do not feel, then set up an appointment with your doctor right away. If mold is the culprit behind your condition, then you need to contact your insurance company and hire a mold remediation company right away to remove the mold and restore your home to its previous condition.
