One of the most common mistakes that people make when subscribing to a new diet (one that they have personally developed) is to severely limit all food types.

In some instances, people even replace good food with power drinks or protein shakes or even bricks of health bars, with hopes of shaving off a few inches from the waistline. Needless to say, any person who subscribes to this kind of fat loss diet usually end up either, discontinuing the diet or cheating on the diet. And both have the unfortunate consequence of actually putting on more pounds on the person.

The same can be said of most fad fat loss diet programs out there. Some of these may be too stringent that people find themselves ditching the entire program, or cherry picking some of parts of the diet (while disregarding the rest), or cheating too often with "bad" foods, or a combination of all these factors. In all cases, these fad diets only end up disappointing the person. For those few who have successfully lost weight with such programs, the results are almost always never permanent. And once the person returns to "normal" eating habits, the pounds pile back on with a vengeance. So how can any person achieve fat loss through diet alone?

The answer may surprise you.

Any fat loss diet program that claims that you can lose weight by simply limiting your calorie intake can be rightfully considered a sham. Fat loss cannot be achieved through simple dieting alone - at least without causing damage to the person's health. Exercise is necessary too, as well as a complete overhaul of one's present lifestyle. This is how it works:

A person consumes calories through food and drinks that are taken on a daily basis. Even if the food is supposed to have low calories, these are calories nonetheless. And if you add that to the calories from the drinks, snacks and whatever else you ingest for sustenance, the calorie count can indeed pile up. Normally, the body expends or uses up these calories through normal everyday functions. Moving about, washing the car, going up a flight of stairs to get to your room are all calorie-burning processes. However, there should be a balance with the amount of calories that you should take in, and the amount that you expend.

If you consume too many calories with which your body cannot process into expendable energy, it stores these up in the fat cells found all over the body. On the other hand, if you consume too few a calories, the body then tries to find other energy sources within the body. It may draw up reserves from existing fat cells... which can promote weight loss. However, the body also draws up from other cells, including the internal organs and the muscles. This is the reason why you feel weak and listless when you are extremely hungry.

A successful fat loss diet should therefore not limit your calorie intake abruptly or severely.
