Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is most likely to cause a rift in ADHD relationships. Having an ADHD parent, child, brother or sister is like walking on a tight rope every single day that you spend with them. It is difficult to determine how to place yourself where ADHD patients are involved because you cannot always anticipate their reactions. It is important to remember that if the situation is frustratingly difficult for you, it is even more difficult and painful to the person suffering ADHD.

ADHD makes it difficult for persons with this behavioral disorder to control their impulses. This behavioral condition incapacitates their self-restraint faculties that are so typical to most of us. Since they do not have the ability to restrain themselves, process the situation and screen their reactions, they usually overreact and tend to say things they do not really mean, which in consequence can be detrimental to ADHD relationships.

It is important for family members and loved ones of ADHD patients to understand that you need to separate the person from the behavioral disorder. Yes, it is difficult and frustrating, but you have to try. The ADHD patient cannot do something about it, but you definitely can.

Also, it is important to know that ADHD patients are hampered in understanding and following instructions. It is important that you only give very simple and short instructions. It is also recommended that ADHD patients be continually reminded of these simple instructions because their memory is one of the brain functions that are impaired by ADHD.

This will actually help the patients to understand what is expected of them. Consequently, it will avoid confusion and forgetfulness. It will also give the patient the opportunity to actually do something correctly because he understands what is being asked of him to do. As such, a better exchange between you and the patient is produced thereby improving ADHD relationships.

Finally, it is important to lower your expectations of ADHD patients. Their mental faculties are negatively affected by ADHD, thus they cannot be expected to act like any other normal human beings. They need to be constantly monitored and instructed. Even the simplest of accomplishments is a feat for these individuals. Thus, it will greatly improve their self-esteem if their good behavior is always recognized and awarded.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can take its toll on ADHD relationships. However, with a good understanding of this condition, you will be able to act accordingly thereby giving a chance for both of your needs to be satisfied and met.
