Is our tap water safe to drink? This is a controversial topic, and people from both sides of the spectrum will argue endlessly that tap water is both safe and unsafe to drink.
The water that comes out of our sinks is first treated at our local municipal system to treat it for impurities, so it should be clean when it reaches your sink, right? What most people do not consider is that before the water comes out of your faucet, the water has to travel through miles of underground pipes before it can reach your home. Water companies should have a regular maintenance and cleaning schedule to clean out these pipes, but in between cleanings, these pipes get dirty like anything else. Even worse is that these pipes are not always enclosed, and sometimes water is exposed to the air for a certain amount of time before continuing its journey to your sink. It is exposed to the air and all of the toxins and chemicals it holds.
Although water is treated at the municipal system, random tests that are conducted by independent agencies find that there are still pathogens and contaminants that manage to get through. Organic and inorganic compounds and even traces of chlorine and chemicals used in prescription drugs have been found in our drinking water supply. Even if the amount is insignificant and might not cause immediate harm to your body, prolonged ingestion of this water has the potential to cause illnesses in the future. The build up of these toxins in your system could cause disorders or other health ailments.
There is also the issue of the use of fluoride in our water. This is another controversial topic, and again, people on both sides will argue endlessly about the benefits or the health risks associated with fluoridated water. Organizations and certain individuals will endorse the use of fluoride in our water, claiming that it is essential to our dental health. Research conducted on animals, however, has showed that fluoride would build up in the brain, affect their behavioral patterns, and caused brain damage. Although the anatomy of an animal and a human are obviously different, you have to wonder what it could be doing to your system if it affects the system of an animal negatively. Further studies have showed that the IQ of children decreased when exposed to fluoride. It is believed to impair the immune system and cause bones to weaken.
It really is up to the individual to decide whether or not they want to continue drinking tap water or not. Depending on where you look up your research, you will get arguments for and against tap water consumption, and it is up to you to discern from propaganda and truth.
