Every cigarette smoker dreads the prospect of quitting. Most smokers would quit if they only had the willpower to get it done. Some people stop cold turkey and never smoke again, but this does not work for everyone. Most of those who stop suddenly end up giving in at some point. Some may stop for months and then one day just start smoking again. It is said that one of the most successful ways to stop smoking is to do it gradually and slowly phase cigarettes out of your life. This gives the smoker more control over the situation and it can make the process of quitting less stressful and increase the chances of success. The following are habits you can break slowly to help you quit:
1. Stop taking cigarettes with you everywhere you go. Every time a cigarette smoker leaves the house, they grab the pack and take it along. Anytime you can leave the house and not take them with you is eliminating the opportunity to smoke while you are gone.
2. Try not to smoke immediately after a meal. Most smokers will automatically grab a cigarette after they finish eating. The ban on smoking in public places helps you stop doing this in a restaurant, but it will not help you at home unless you make yourself stop doing it. Go for a walk or do anything besides smoking as soon as you eat.
3. Never leave cigarettes on your bed table at night. If they are not there in the morning, you can not light one first thing. One way to avoid this is to leave them in your car. At least you have to get up and go outside to get them.
4. Stop smoking in the house. This is the wisest choice especially if you share your home with others that do not smoke.
5. Make a conscious effort to not smoke around anyone who does not. It makes you smell bad to them and it is takes away one more opportunity to smoke. Others will appreciate it.
6. Keep gum or hard candy with you instead of your cigarettes. Smoking gives you an urge to put something in your mouth. Learning to placate that urge with sugar free gum or hard candy might help during the quitting process.
7. Allow yourself so many cigarettes per day and reduce the number one at a time every few days or so.
8. Stop smoking at work at all. Even if you have the opportunity to smoke at lunch, do not. This might be one of the hardest habits to break, but you have to try if you really want to quit. If you fail a few times, do not give up. Remember, you are doing this one step at a time and as long as you keep trying, you can eventually be successful. Stop looking at it as every cigarette you did smoke, rather see it as every cigarette you do not smoke.
