Weight loss from the medicine, health, or physical fitness point of view is the reduction of total body weight, due to such factors as a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and lean mass. Weight loss can be either intentional or unintentional. The key to intentional weight loss can also be attributed eating a healthy diet as well as for a regular exercise program. In order for one to lose weight the practical steps to take include eating less, maintaining muscle, burning more calories, doing cardiovascular exercises and eating healthy in addition to keeping yourself motivated by setting goals and striving to attain them.

Unintentional weight loss - Unintentional weight loss can stem from the poor management of type 1 diabetes mellitus, otherwise known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), which is often caused by an excess amount of glucose and an insufficient amount of insulin in the bloodstream.

When this happens, the release of triglycerides from adipose (fat) tissue and catabolism (breakdown) of amino acids occurs in the muscle tissues as result, it leads to a loss of both fat and lean mass, leading to an overall reduction in the total body weight.

Intentional weight loss - This occurs when individuals strive to lose the total body mass with a view of improving fitness, health and in some cases appearance. In persons who are overweight or obese, therapeutic loss of weight decreases the likelihood of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and certain types of cancer.

In most instances it occurs when an individual is in a state of negative energy balance, more so when the body is consuming more energy than it is gaining. This results in the body using up the stored reserves from fat or muscle and over time it leads reduction/loss of weight.

Weight loss programs - In view of the need of clients to achieve fat loss, there should be a well laid down plan or steps of how to lose fat. The program can be as follows:

Cut the calories- to ensure that one loses weight, one should eat fewer calories or increase the calories used by the body through exercise, or combine both .The best approaches would also involve having foods with a little less fat in the diet thus cutting caloric consumption considerably.

Weight training-taking up weight training is also a way of losing fat as it incorporates the major muscle groups of the body hence it burns more calories as compared to aerobic exercise when done consistently over a period of time.

Easy aerobic exercise-aerobic exercise also plays a role even though it can't be compared to the effect that weight training will have, however it plays a critical role.

Eating proteins and carbohydrates-it's required that one takes in fewer fat calories, it become necessary for the individual to include more calories in his/her diet from protein and carbohydrates. This is because there is an increased demand for proteins and carbohydrates associated with physical activity.
