The master detox, also known as the lemon diet, lemonade diet and maple syrup diet, is a body cleanse that was originally created by naturopath Stanley Burroughs over 60 years ago. It is currently being revived by actresses and celebrities for its rapid weight loss effect.

The Philosophy

The original philosophy behind the master detox program is to internally cleanse the body. In today's rushed and stressed society the majority of the food eaten is processed and with a fast food restaurant on every corner it's easier and less expensive to purchase a meal on the go, than to worry about the health aspect of the food you put into your mouth. Eating a high amount of processed food can add a high level of toxins to your body.

This philosophy is similar to any cleansing program. The ultimate goal is to cleanse the body while providing it with enough energy to eliminate the toxins. It also provides your body with the opportunity to rest from the strenuous task of digesting food. This enables the system to throw off the toxins and poisons that have been lodged deep within the cells.

Toxins & weight loss problems

There is however mounting evidence that toxins do have an effect on the weight control system making it hard for many to shift weight. So although the main aim of the master cleanse is not really weight loss you can eliminate some of the toxins that are probably keeping you fat.

The Benefits

Some people wonder if detoxing is really worth the hassle and it certainly takes some will power to stick to it. Is depriving yourself food for a certain amount of time really going to make a difference in your life? Most of the real health benefits from a master detox program are internal and not something you may see on day 1. When you complete this cleanse, the health benefits are said to be:

* The removal of toxins and dissolving of mucous
* The cleansing of your cells and tissues
* The removal of deposits in joints and muscles
* The relieving of irritation in the nerves
* The creating of a healthy blood stream
* A feeling of youthfulness and wellbeing
* Weight loss for those who intend to remain on a healthy balanced diet

The Ingredients

As in most detox programs the main ingredients are all natural. The ingredients included in the master detox drink are; lemon juice, water, cayenne pepper and Grade B maple syrup. You drink this concoction 6 or more times a day together with a salt water flush every morning and a laxative tea at night if needed. Each ingredient is used with a particular purpose in mind.

Lemon juice is used to make the body alkaline and help stimulate the liver and cleanse the colon. It also supplies the nutrient vitamin C.

Water is the key element in the cleansing process. It's the most important part of every bodily function and must be from a pure source.

Cayenne pepper is known as a "hot" food which contains capsaicin. It helps to boost your metabolism, helps with digestion, cleansing (helping the body remove mucous) and curbing appetite.

Maple Syrup provides a sweet flavor. It's also responsible for your daily calorie intake although the calorie intake is low. The Grade B maple syrup stipulated by Burroughs supplies more minerals than the lighter grades. It also supplies trace levels of B vitamins, amino acids. The sucrose provides the energy you need.

Love it or hate it

In spite of this some people don't do well on it at all. Many give up before they complete the course. As with all detox programs you have to find one that you feel you can stick to and that suits you.

For a true year round clean feeling you can detox 3 or 4 times a year. This will help keep your body in a normal healthy condition. The master detox program should be followed for a minimum of 10 days. In order to get the full benefit for a detoxification process it can be followed for up to 20 days.
