Diabetes is a terrible disease. Once it gets hold of you, it does not let go. What it does to someone is terrible to watch. It slowly sucks the life out of you.
This disease has no mercy on age, race, or sex. It can sneak up on you before you realize what is happening. It has no mercy!
I wondered where the word came from and what it meant. I looked it up in the dictionary. Here is the definition:
"any of several disorders characterized by increased urine production. It is also called diabetes mellitus, a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, usually occurring in genetically predisposed individuals, characterized by inadequate production or utilization of insulin and resulting in excessive amounts of glucose in the blood and urine, excessive thirst, weight loss, and in some cases progressive destruction of small blood vessels leading to such complications as infections and gangrene of the limbs or blindness."
Let us discuss the definition in parts.
Part One (1)
The part that states "increased urine production" is the symptom of the disease we have all heard the most about. For years doctors have said that one of the first symptoms is increased urination. If this starts happening to you, it is time to visit a doctor who can run blood tests to determine if it is the onset of diabetes.
Part Two (2)
The second sentence in the definition states "It is also called diabetes mellitus, a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, usually occurring in genetically predisposed individuals."
I looked up the term "genetically predisposed" and found it means because of a person's heredity, it may be inherently harder for them to turn food down or for them to exercise. Furthermore, because their body does not correctly metabolize carbohydrates, they stand more of a chance of developing diabetes.
Part Three (3)
The final part of the definition states "the disorder of carbohydrate metabolism is characterized by inadequate production or utilization of insulin and resulting in excessive amounts of glucose in the blood and urine, excessive thirst, weight loss, and in some cases progressive destruction of small blood vessels leading to such complications as infections and gangrene of the limbs or blindness."
This part just about sums it all up! Look at all the things carbohydrate metabolism can cause:
* Inadequate production or utilization of insulin
* Excessive amounts of glucose in the blood and urine
* Excessive thirst
* Weight loss
* Progressive destruction of small blood vessels leading to such complications as infections and gangrene of the limbs or blindness
Folks, pay attention here! Two words "carbohydrate metabolism" is the name of the most important cause of the progression of diabetes. If we do not control how our body metabolizes carbohydrates we are headed straight for diabetes! The very last bullet names the two worse things that can happen to us because of uncontrolled diabetes: gangrene of the limbs or blindness!
This is just a beginning of a series of articles on diabetes by me. I promised my mom I would do this and I intend to keep my promise to her. I plan to lead you through the progression of the disease and discuss the horrors diabetes wreaks on the human body. I have seen it personally destroy one part at a time in my mom. I will share that destruction with you.
