Across the country there are millions of Americans that feel they are victims of the taxes and prices that are on a pack of cigarettes these days. With the latest taxes that have been applied to cigarettes, most brands are somewhere between 4 to 5 dollars a pack. Why are cigarette taxes so high? This cost an average smoker about $30.00 a week. There is nothing out there on the market that has a tax rate so high.

When Americans purchase something, the rate of taxes that are applied is around 9 cents on a dollar. It does not matter what you buy, it is the same amount of tax applied. This is not true when it comes to cigarettes. The amount of taxes that are applied to cigarettes is about 65 to 70 cents on the dollar. It is very simple to see that smokers are being unfairly taxed on a product that the government has been guilty themselves of issuing to our military. If the government helped make it possible for soldiers to smoke cigarettes, then how can they punish them for being addicted to them now?

Even though this was way back then before Americans really knew the true facts about smoking cigarettes and the true health dangers, since it has been proven how dangerous they are, cigarettes are still legal to buy. Why does the government allow them to still be legal? Why do smokers carry the burden of unfair taxes applied to a product that is so addictive and hard to get away from when it continues to be legal to buy them? Americans want to know what the reason is for the heavy tax that is put on smokers. It is said that cigarettes are heavily taxed so it can help pay for the health care of smokers, but why not just make them illegal? It is costing the smokers more money, so why is some of this money not going to help people quit?

There are many things out there on the market today that say it will help you quit, but have you seen the prices for the gum that is supposed to help? There are pills that are said to help that you can get by prescription, but they can cost upwards of $100.00 or more for one bottle. Unless you have insurance, this can be hard to pay for. Why does the government not use cigarette tax money to distribute these stop smoking aids to smokers for free to help them quit? It seems like there is plenty of profit being made by those who sell cigarettes and others who profit in helping them quit. No one is saying that cigarette smokers should continue their habit, but the point is, it is an addiction, not just a habit. As long as cigarettes are sold legally, they should not be subject to a higher tax than is paid on a high cholesterol causing cheeseburger.
