Tips For The Chemically Sensitive

We are in the industrial age and have been for many years. Chemicals are all around us -- in the air, the food we eat, on our bodies and in our clothes. I have found through a process of elimination that I've been allergic to some chemicals for a long time. And it doesn't have to be always manmade chemicals either. Even whatever comes from bamboo has made me break out in a rash. I rather think that the rough surface of natural bamboo does it, perhaps more than what is in the plant itself. In any case, you can cut down your incidences of reactions to chemicals by trying a few simple tips first, then adding them to your routine and very soon you will be a lot less itchier, sneeze and more congestion-free than you thought possible.

The best way to start is to use as many natural or organic products as is feasible. Many supermarkets and grocery chains have sections devoted to at least natural foods, so you can check there, plus health food stores and also that chain of Hawaiian themed food and wine stores. We had one of the latter open up in our city and they are a great source for natural and/or organic veggies and meat. Besides food, you can switch to either fragrance free or organic/natural body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap and laundry detergent. The latter is actually very important. After all, you are in bed for perhaps eight hours and breathing in those laundry detergent fumes and chemicals can't be good for those sensitive to chemicals.

Also, be careful of anything you burn like incense or candles, as substances in them (and the wick in the candles' case) can be very toxic to sensitive ones. If you are in the mood for herbs, use a vaporizer as they are great to soothe your breathing passages, as well as for that exotic cooking process known as molecular gastronomy. Be careful of the "normal" allergy causing things too. If you go outside and someone is cutting their grass -- that could set you off. Spring is a bad season for allergies as are windy days, and for the latter, cold ones are the worst.

It's hard being allergic, I know, but you can get it really under control and do it in as natural and healthy a way as possible. Read up a bit on the various aspects, visit a few healthy food stores, and jot down some notes. You'll be on the road to a healthier life in no time. Be safe and happy.
