There are a lot of people in Westchester that suffer from a real fear of seeing their dentists, but fortunately there are many new treatments and methods available to help ease some of those anxieties and put patients more at ease with keeping their appointments. Those providers who specialize in something now known as sedation dentistry are some of the most sought after specialists in their field, and it is easy to see why.

Although fear of the dentist is normal for a lot of people, especially children, there are plenty of patients who have not had even a dental checkup for years due to having a true phobia of dentistry. A lack of cleanings becomes minor issues, and without proper care, those minor issues eventually turn into big, painful, expensive problems. There are some different ways that Westchester dentists help their patients feel more at ease for their appointments, and while some methods are performed by the professional, others are simple remedies that patients are instructed to do even before they reach the office for the appointment.

First of all, probably the most common thing that a patient is given is a prescription for a strong anti anxiety medicine that should be taken either the night before an appointment or 30 minutes prior to it. These oral medications provide a painless, non invasive way to sedate the patient just enough to help them relax. It is recommended, however, that someone else be available to drive the patient to and from the appointment for safety reasons. Sometimes a nurse that works in the office can give a pill to the patient while they are waiting for the appointment too, and this commonly happens.

Other methods that Westchester dentists use include inhalation methods and even intravenous procedures. If the oral methods are not suitable for a patient for any number of reasons, they can be given nitrous oxide (laughing gas) at the beginning of the appointment to help them relax in addition to any oral medications if any. Before any procedure is done, a mask is placed over the face so that the relaxing gas is inhaled, and it is very effective and has been used for a long time in dentistry. The patient is totally coherent, just more relaxed.

Finally, the intravenous method is one that is for especially tough cases. This way the medication can be administered and take effect very quickly. The injection has an almost instant effect. The patient is not put totally under (unless it is a very extreme case) but is instantly much less anxious and more able to relax. It is important to note that any time that any degree of sedation is used, patients need a friend or family member to drive them to and from the appointments with Westchester dentists.
