The purchase of organic food in the U.S. is increasing. Many new stores are opening up that offer natural and organic foods, and many supermarkets now have aisles that display this type of food. The USDA has been working on labeling standards for organic foods. Farmers and their related organizations have been debating for years over the need for federal organic labeling guidelines. An unfair bias was perceived by conventional farmers -- that prevented the farmers from encouraging labeling of organic products. The Grocery Manufacturers of America complained about the new organic standards. They said that the labels would mislead consumers into thinking that organic products are safer and more nutritious.
The secretary of agriculture said that the seal that will be applied to organic foods doesn't mean that the product is safer or more nutritious, only that it's organic. Users of organic foods believe that these products are safer in that they contain no pesticides, are better for the environment, and that they hold more nutrients and trace minerals. Using food labeled organic for them, is a means to obtain a healthier lifestyle. Some use organics because their bodies are allergic to the chemicals found in some food and other products. They just wish for a clear choice in what they consume or put on to their bodies.
New USDA labeling standards tells people what can be called organic. Organic will mean that the product contains no added chemicals or synthetic pesticides. The food will be produced without genetic engineering, irradiation and sewage fertilization. Livestock cannot be given antibiotics or feed that is not one hundred percent organic. Before this standardization, consumers often found it hard to interpret often misleading labels. Organic foods can cost more and could contain dangerous bacteria. But some doctors also believe that the accumulative effect of toxins in our air, water and food can be harmful to our health, and support a more organic lifestyle.
If you wish to start on a healthier lifestyle by eating organic foods, there are a few simple things you can do to save money. With their thick skins, citrus fruit does not have to be organic as we peel this kind of fruit (wash it first before peeling). And the ten cleanest foods are bananas, broccoli, cherries, corn, onions, pineapple, asparagus, sweet peas, cauliflower and watermelon. It's a safe bet to wash all of your food before eating, even if it's organic. Taking a regular anti-oxidant will help remove any toxins on food, and of course, some foods are natural, and organic, anti-oxidants themselves.
