Multi vitamins are probably one of the most popular health food supplements available. Many people take them on a daily basis regardless of their current fitness level. Their intention is to ensure that they get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for each of the thirteen vitamins and all the associated health benefits. However, what a lot of people do not realise is that these vitamin supplements may not be as beneficial as we are led to believe. In this article I will be expanding on this point and discussing four reasons to avoid multi vitamin supplements.
1) THEY ENCOURAGE POOR DIETARY CHOICES:- One of the main marketing tools used by supplement companies is that they are necessary because the modern diet is lacking in many vitamins. However, this message encourages people to start taking a vitamin pill instead of improving their diet. Whilst a poor diet will probably benefit from multi vitamin supplements it is far better to improve your diet by eating more healthy, natural vitamin rich foods.
2) THEY ENCOURAGE EXCESS CONSUMPTION:- Another common misconception with vitamin supplements is that the more you take the healthier you will be. However, the truth is that overdosing on most vitamins has no additional benefit. In fact overdosing on fat soluble can damage your body's cells. Whilst overdosing on vitamins is not a problem that is specific to supplements, multi vitamins are a lot more concentrated and therefore it is a lot easier to overdoes on them.
3) THEY NEGLECT OTHER NUTRIENTS:- Many vitamin rich foods contain high levels of other essential nutrients as well. For example, most fruits and vegetables are a rich source of dietary fibre. Therefore, by taking a multi vitamin instead of eating fruits and vegetables you will be missing out on a host of health benefits that these foods can provide.
4) THEY ARE NOT TAILORED TOWARDS YOUR NEEDS:- Your diet may be lacking in one or more vitamins but it is very unlikely to be lacking all thirteen. Furthermore, multi vitamins do not contain equal dosages for each of the thirteen vitamins. Each different brand contains different concentrations. Therefore, it is very difficult to find a supplement that satisfies your individual needs without causing any overdosing.
I hope this article has opened your eyes to the potential adverse effects of taking vitamin supplements. Whilst there are situations that may make them necessary, where possible you should focus your attentions on improving your diet. There are plenty of vitamin rich foods out there that are much more beneficial to your health than a daily pill.
