Vaporizers come in all shapes, sizes and varieties of use. The basic design encompasses a heating unit and some type of storage device for the vapor. There are several different types of heating mechanisms and storage units with a range of sizes. With a multitude of different accessories and vaporizer parts, each design is unique in some way. However, applying the basic concepts of the device, there are three main aspects that are used for classification. These are the type of heating element, the type of storage for the vapor, and the storage capacity.

As it stands today, three types of heating elements are used in the design of a vaporizer. The original design uses a form of heating called conduction. In conduction heating, a substance is placed on a plate of metal and heated. From this design came the development of convection heating, which uses the same concept of a convection oven. With convection, hot air is passed over the substance to heat it and create vapor. This method is generally regarded as the most efficient as a steady stream of hot air at a constant temperature passes over the herbs. A third type of heating involves the absorption of radiant energy that is created by bright light. By absorbing the radiant energy, the temperature of the substance rises.

A second classification of vaporizer design considers the storage mechanism. Once vapor is created in the vaporizer, the vapor must be contained for use. Since vapor is relatively short lived, storage devices are designed to store the vapor temporarily. Such mechanisms include balloons, bags, metal cylinders and glass containers. The intended use of the vaporizer and the type of material that is being used in it largely determines the choice of storage container. Thus, the container type and the material from which it is made largely determine the classification of each design. However, the vent-balloon method is regarded as the "best" because of its many different applications.

Vaporizers are used in a plethora of disciplines. From medical treatment to aromatherapy to recreational use, various designed are used to meet a variety of needs. For this reason, the capacity of a vaporizer is yet a third type of design classification. A single use design would have a much smaller capacity for material and vapor than a design that is intended to serve a large group. A smaller capacity design, such as the e-cigarette, is generally more portable and carried by a person on a daily basis. The larger capacity designs are less portable, generally stationary, and are often used in a group setting.
