Once you start researching skin care it won't be long before you start to learn about keratin. What is keratin?

Keratin is found right throughout our bodies. It is a protein that is extremely strong and it can be found in the hard areas of our bodies like our nails and also in the softer areas of our bodies, like skin. A lot of keratin is found in our nails, teeth, hair and skin.

It is produced in the epidermis of our skin by cells called keratinocytes, and these keratin cells slowly come to the surface of our skin where they form a protective layer of dead skin cells on the surface, and slowly slough off over time.

Keratin does some good things for our skin like providing some waterproofing qualities, but there are 2 functions in particular that are essential to skin health. Elasticity and strength and elasticity.

Both of these are essential to skin health, but as we age our store of skin keratin reduces so the strength and elasticity of our skin reduces.

So you would be accurate in assuming that if you use skin care products with keratin in them you are restoring your stores of skin keratin and thereby improving your skin strength and elasticity right? Wrong.

That's because of the process used to produce the keratin found in mainstream skin care products. It is extracted from the horns and hooves of dead animals using acid and heat and this "denaturalizes" the keratin, or renders it into a form that can't be used by the skin.

So what is functional keratin? This is keratin that is extracted from the wool of sheep without using heat or acid, and so it is not denaturalized. It is functional in the sense that it is still in a form that is available for the skin to use.

Making functional keratin has been perfected only recently by one small company that has now patented the process, and this company has created a product called Cynergy TK that contains this functional keratin. Cynergy TK is now an primary ingredient in the worlds best skin care products.

Studies on the effectiveness of products containing Cynergy TK have shown visible improvements in fine lines and wrinkles on the skin and an improvement in skin complexion.

You can get skin care products that contain Cynergy TK. Cynergy TK is very expensive, but the products containing it aren't any more expensive than the mainstream skin care products because the company that makes them doesn't advertise so saves huge amounts of it's budget, and puts this back into product quality.

The price of big brand skincare products has to reflect the cost of the advertising.

I hope that's enlightened you somewhat about what keratin is and what it does for the skin, and what functional keratin is.
