You will find the term 'women's health associate' used a lot in rural surroundings. Certain women volunteers go through all the hardships involved with the austere life in villages to assist and help women to organize and recognize disease symptoms that come with menopause. These women call themselves women's health associates because they usually act as health advisors for the women in that particular rural area.

Volunteering for Women's Health Associates: What Does it Take to Become One?

You need to have that fire in your belly to make a difference in someone's life. You need to empathize and care for others who cannot and do not have the facilities and/or access to the minimum basic human amenities. These include medical attention, eating three square meals a day, having a glass of milk, etc. This is the reason why in most of the rural areas women are neglected by their children and husband and then even by themselves.

No More Postponing

In a world full of poverty, it is good to know that there are those who care about making a difference in the lives of others. In rural countries, women are sometimes not treated with the respect and the attention that they deserve, and as such, are not well-versed in taking care of themselves.

The women's health associates get the women into the habit of taking care of themselves; there is no beauty in this world without health. In this way women will get their anemia treated and they will also be able find out if there is any other disease developing in their bodies. This test should be repeated after 2-3 years and so on so in case a disease develops, it can be conquered.

Also, the living conditions in which many women live are appalling. Poor sewerage and the improper storage of food lead to many health problems in themselves, but for women who have lived their entire lives in such a manner, they need to be taught how to keep their environment clean.

The women's health associates can and should educate women. Learn to have balanced meals - this is great as long as it possible. Balanced meals will provide the body sufficient energy, vitamins and minerals, in order to keep fit and healthy. The women's health associate is the one who ensures that everybody in the village knows what they are talking about, and knowledge leads to good health.
