Bolster pillows are those that are cylindrical in shape that used to be used really only for decoration. However, the supportive shape of the little cushions make them ideal for sleeping to reduce insomnia, snoring, neck pain, and sleep apnea. These days the cushions can be filled with so many different fillers, some of which are the traditional cotton/poly blend materials, some are wool, there are foam ones, and there are those that are filled with buckwheat hulls or millet hulls. The hulls used as filling are quickly becoming really popular for a lot of reasons.

There are no dust mites that get into them, they are considered to be hypo allergenic, they are very easy to take care of, and they also are very durable. They never lose their shape or support, and last for five years or more before they are usually replaced.

Bolster pillows have been used in many different cultures for hundreds of years for therapeutic reasons, and there are those that are large in size that are used in Asia that are meant to be hugged during sleep. Many people also use them in between the knees for support of the joints there and to ease pressure from misalignment of the hips. There is a tradition that places these cushions as being made of bamboo in Asia long ago that were given to a man to hug so that he would not feel lonely while he was away from home. Europeans had also used the bolster pillows for years and years, and have called them the Dutch Wife or the Bamboo Wife too.

There are medical advantages to using them too. Children in many cultures around the world are encouraged to hug them during sleep until they grow to adulthood. It is thought to be very soothing and calming for the mind during sleep. They are available just about anywhere you can find bedding, and they vary in price quite a bit depending on what they are made of and how large they are. There are also a lot of different cases and covers that are sold to go along with them, so you can change the look of them to match your decor as often as you like.

The large bolster pillows are also sometimes known as the body pillow, and the semi anatomical shape that they have make them very conducive to a healthy sleep and great for maintaining supportive posture of the body too. A cylindrically shaped item placed at a babys back is shown to significantly reduce the risk of choking during sleep or dying from SIDS.

The bolster pillows today are manufactured with minimal amounts of material and are durable and they hold their shape for long periods of time too. They are pretty easy to clean so they are very convenient there really is no special work that you have to do to maintain them. On the whole, bolster pillows provide a lot of benefits for everyone, no matter what their age is.
