In today's world, there are more overweight people than ever before. Many in our country and all over the world buy health books and study supplements and try to cook balanced meals. We try and read every label we can and study the ingredients listed. We often try and limit our fat and carbohydrate and sugar intake. Many people, though, are suspicious of the health craze and think that there is much contradictory info out there. Can we have a healthy and beneficial healthy diet? We can, if we pay attention to four areas: Sugar, water, bread and artificial foods.
Americans eat a lot of sugar in a year -- about 120 pounds. Most of this sugar is refined sugar, from sugar cane (usually). In its raw form such as in sugar cane or sugar beets, sugar has vitamins and minerals that our bodies need for burning and storing it. Eating refined sugar means that our bodies take the stored nutrients and use them to burn the sugar. A high intake of processed sugar means that the body's immune system is reduced.
Bread is a big worry. As often found in stores, bread made from refined and enriched flour lacks fiber and other important nutrients. Whole grain bread, and especially organic bread, is much better for our bodies. Bread can be made with many alternative flours, such as corn meal, white or brown rice flour, quinoa (an ancient grain) or tapioca and other flours. Any of the pasta, cereals and other dishes utilizing grains can also be found in these alternative forms. Artificial substances and processed are rife within the American diet. Diets with soy milk instead of cow's milk, and containing more fruit and vegetables and other single ingredient foods, are a good start. Starting a garden is a great idea as you know from seed to table where the food has been and what it contains.
Water is a problem because it's often purified from the source, and that can be a problem. Chlorine is added to rivers because sewage can be dumped there. Other chemical agents are often added to kill the bacteria. So, we end up drinking the bacteria or the chemicals used to kill them. If you want to use the water from your faucets, then a UV only or a UV/ozonating unit can be used. As for bottled water -- ninety nine percent of it comes in plastic bottles. Some plastic has been known to leach into the water and that is not a really healthy option either. Plastic polymers are the culprit here. If you can try and stay as natural as possible and buy organic, then you will be on the road to a more chemical free life. Be healthy and happy.
