There is no simple cure for being lactose intolerant, but there are many things you can do to alleviate it. Food containing dairy products is abundant and it's sometimes hard to find things that do not contain dairy. Hard perhaps, but not impossible. Cheese is one of the hardest things to delete from your diet, as it is in so many things. We love our cheese, but there is a substitute or two for even this common food.
The sugar in dairy products, lactose, is the culprit. It is broken down in our lower intestines. Strangely enough, this intestine produces its own lactose which cancels out the other source. A medicine taken before eating any dairy can help people digest it, but others will have to seek and find those substitutes, especially for cheese and ice cream as they seem to be our favorites. Doctors may suggest taking a calcium pill if you go on a dairy reduced or free diet, plus a digestive aid pill after eating, as the latter can help coat your stomach and reduce reactions to lactose.
First reactions with lactose intolerance are usually in your stomach. A person may feel dizzy or sick or just unwell in general, and could develop some problems in their lower intestine. This is because, if you are lactose intolerant, your body cannot digest it and the substance just sits around causing problems, as it were. Pain may be severe, so it is important to learn how to balance your need or desire for dairy, and your allergic reactions to the products. Some infants found to be lactose intolerant, are fed soy formulas. There are many soy-based ingredients available for purchase, even in regular supermarkets, but especially in health food and organic or natural stores.
You can contact your doctor about substitutes and supplements to make sure you're getting the proper nutrition. Soy milk is often fortified with calcium, so you can get the right nutrition from it. The keyword to being lactose intolerant is experimentation with substitutes. If you don't like the taste of something, you can try another brand or type. So many new products are being developed that there is no need to be worried about feeling deprived. And as always, stay healthy and happy.
