The debate, or some might say slanging match, surrounding the validity of electronic cigarettes shows no sign of letting up and there seems to be no genuine solution appearing on the smokeless horizon. Governments in some countries have recently recommended that companies withhold electronic cigarettes from sale until health organisations come out and declare them safe.
Passive smoking is a proven killer and if my father was alive to tell the tale then he would surely attest to this, as second hand smoke destroyed his lungs by the age of 53. I am also a non smoker yet in my younger years travelled in the same building trade circles as my dad, so what health bombshell may be laying in wait for me, God only knows.
With this in mind and all the 'smoking kills' signs that are emblazoned all over normal cigarettes, it does seem somewhat remarkable that the electronic cigarette is not being heralded or at the very least being hurriedly and vigorously tested to see if we have a health and safety breakthrough on our hands!
If the claims of the electronic cigarette companies are eventually proved to be accurate then it will be without doubt the beginning of a revolution. These electronic cigarette devices have the potential to change the face of the planet as we know it. Life changing certainly!
Being a non smoker I cannot speak for all smokers but I do know many that would much rather find something that would help them quit smoking or at least something they can smoke that isnt going to either destroy their health or kill them.
I may well be naive politically but I have yet to read anything about electronic cigarettes that suggests they are anything other than a positive, viable and healthier alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. They claim to be a cigarette you can smoke without the harmful toxins known to be in regular cigarettes.
They claim they can be smoked as an alternative to a normal smoking habit or has an aid to help in the quitting process. A variable strength nicotine cartridge is a fundamental part of the e-cigarette and allows the smoker, if they wish, to gradually reduce the amount of nicotine they intake.
Why, when the potential of the electronic cigarette is so obviously huge, are we still waiting for answers? Health organisations are saying they have not been tested. Why havent they been tested? Is there some political conspiracy being played out behind the scenes? If the potential is genuine, why isnt there a frantic and determined effort to get electronic cigarettes declared officially safe as soon as possible? Nobody seems to be in a hurry to declare the e-cigarette unsafe either.
As this is a very personal look and viewpoint about electronic cigarettes, my own conclusion is that I hope that whatever wrangling is going on behind closed doors that the result is a good one for the electronic cigarette and that it becomes a product that fulfils its enormous promise.
