Trying too hard to get that good night's sleep for the past four or five days? If this is the case, then it is recommended that you visit your physician and ask for an evaluation. You may have insomnia and you need to act on it so that this sleeping disorder cannot affect the way you live and the way you work.

In the evaluation that will be performed by the doctor, there is a big chance that your doctor will tell you that your insomnia is not a disease, rather this is just a symptom of a more serious health complication. There is also that chance that your insomnia can be caused by a major disease or the sleeping issue can be a product of a psychological problem. An evaluation that can be conducted by your doctor is important since this will help your doctor identify which type of conventional medical treatment you can use.

#1: Hypnotic medication

One such conventional approach to insomnia is through hypnotic medication. This is only recommended for a short term use. Often this is partnered with a number of other approaches like the adoption of better sleep hygiene, use of stimulus control, better sleep-restriction, education and the need for relaxation therapy.

# 2: Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Another conventional medical treatment option is through the use of cognitive behavior therapy. Based on some researches, this form of therapy is considered as more effective than hypnotic medications. In this kind of therapy the sufferers of insomnia are often taught how to develop their sleeping habits and these sufferers will be educated about the counter-productive thinking about sleep. The effects of this type of therapy are worth mentioning. It has been believed that this therapy has a sustained and a long lasting effect on the person even after the treatment has been stopped for some time.

# 3: Over the counter medications

When it comes to conventional ways to treat insomnia, the over-the-counter medications will always come into the picture. For most sufferers of insomnia, the sleeping pills and the sedatives are the answer. But as we all know, these options will have some side effects too and may cause psychological dependence. The side effects are often felt by the older persons.

To be sure, these sleep medications that can be prescribed by doctors or can be purchased over-the-counter are considered as effective when these are used with caution and when these medications are only used for a short period of time. The use of these sleeping pills is also suggested during special circumstances. For example, when a person is travelling for long hours and he needs to cross a time zone then the use of sleeping pills may be okay in order to help him sleep.

Sleeping pills can be suggested too to those patients who are recovering from a medical procedure. There will be times too when these sleeping medications are used sparingly at the start of the behavioral treatment for the sleeping disorder. This is true if the sleep deprivation of the person is so severe. Sleeping pills need to be used sparingly and if the side effects are problems, then there is another conventional treatment approach to insomnia- through herbs. Herbs can be soothing not just to the body, but to the mind and spirit as well. This is just the right mix needed by a tired body after a hard day's work.
