The use of chemicals in cleaning products, manufacturing of carpets, upholstery, and even building materials makes it ever more difficult to escape off gassing of airborne chemicals into your home.

The warnings on many of these products alone are enough to get us moving towards alternative products and ways of doing things. Here are 4 ways to reduce airborne chemicals in your home that you can put to use starting today.

1. Make Your Own Cleaning Products. Our grandparents' homes were spotless, and they did it without all the new-fangled products that we can't seem to live without today. Many of the cleansers were made from ordinary supplies found in their pantries such as baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, borax, and peroxide.

Doing a little online research, or if you're lucky enough to still have your grandparents in your life, asking them about what they used to clean will give you a new attitude about the chemicals you are currently using.

You will very likely find that your home made products are more people and earth friendly will work just as well, and will no doubt be more budget friendly as well.

2. Read the Labels. Fortunately the vast majority of products carry labels that disclose the ingredients used. And if they don't, ask for help in the store, or get a number for the manufacturer and call before you buy. This may seem a bit over the top, but if it's a big ticket item like carpet, wood furniture, or upholstered seating, these pieces are likely to be around for a while.

Buying smart the first time will not only save you money, but make your home a healthier place to be, and save your family from breathing the chemicals that will very likely off gas into your air for a very long time.

3. Choose Organic Products. Organic products avoid the use of chemicals that have been proven to be the most damaging to people and the environment. And yes, they often cost more, but they are well worth the additional money because they greatly reduce your long term exposure to chemicals which can do nothing but increase your chances for healthier living.

4. Use a Chemical Air Purifier to Filter Your Air. The most important word here is 'chemical'. Air purifiers are designed with different pollutants in mind, so it is important to make sure that the one you choose has a filter that is specifically designed to remove airborne chemicals that can off gas from cleaning products, carpets, paints, and the myriad of other products that are chemically based.

Opting for a cleaner that has a high efficiency particle arresting or HEPA filter as well would mean you also have a cleaner that is able to take out sub micron size particulates down to .3 microns, and this would assure that your air is as clean as it can possibly be 24 hours every day.
