People have smoked one plant or another for thousands of years, but recently health concerns have made inhaling combusted materials socially unacceptable. One out of every two tobacco smokers in the United States is killed by the habit in one way or another, but many people simply don't have the desire or the motivation to quit.
For those people, e-cigarettes may be the answer. The tar and carcinogens associated with tobacco cigarettes cannot be found in e-cigarette products and many smokers who learn of the products are amazed after trying them. While they do not taste exactly like a tobacco cigarette, it is close enough that a smoker could get used to it fairly quickly, especially if they are determined to quit smoking. Being able to see the smoke and hold something in their hands and between their lips is what many smokers like about e-cigarettes, because it addresses the mental addiction along with the nicotine addiction.
The nicotine in e-cigarette mist is absorbed almost entirely in the throat and it absorbed faster than the nicotine in a tobacco cigarette would be. This creates an instant satisfaction with the smoker and with no more nicotine craving present, the smoker is able to set his e-cigarette down wherever he chooses and whenever he chooses because it is not hot. In fact, an e-cigarette is only 10% as hot as a lit tobacco cigarette and poses no danger of setting anything on fire when put down. No more ash trays!
Some health officials are blasting the product, claiming that there is no evidence to support the product's safety, but there are numerous health studies that have been conducted in the United Kingdom and in New Zealand that state using e-cigarettes is several times safer than smoking tobacco.
While a few health officials have gone as far as to say that e-cigarettes could cause nicotine poisoning, this is extremist thinking. Nicotine poisoning is extremely rare and normally is a result of misuse of insecticides. Children and toddlers are more prone to it than anyone else due to their body size and go to the emergency room after eating cigarettes or cigarette butts. Because e-cigarette refill cartridges often contain nicotine, it is not recommended to store them anywhere toddlers or pets can obtain them. There is no more risk of nicotine poisoning than tobacco cigarettes, but they and e-cigarette cartridges should be kept out of the reach of children.
Most e-cigarettes also include a safety feature which prevents the atomizer from being over-used, such as taking too many puffs in a short period of time or taking a puff longer than a few seconds.
