If your life growing up was anything like mine, it was great times. I came from a big family. There were six kids in my family, four boys and 2 girls. We had a lot of fun playing together. We also did a lot of things and ended up being in trouble.
We did a lot of things together as a family. We prayed together. We went to church together and we ate our meals together. When we went into church our family took up one whole pew. When we had family meals, everyone did their part and we sat down at the table together.
Meals were a great time. We all helped cook, set the table, serve the food, do the dishes and clean up the table when we were finished eating. No one sat idly by while the rest of us worked. The only one who did not participate was my dad and he had worked hard all day to provide for your family.
Our family meals consisted of lots of carbohydrates, fried foods, dessert, and lots of sweet tea. People had not heard of cholesterol, HDL, triglycerides, high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, etc. It was a time when people worked hard and ate big, hardy meals. Food was not wasted and my mom bought foods to cook that would be sufficient to feed a family of six. We ate lots of fried potatoes and biscuits and gravy. One thing for sure, food was not wasted and neither was money. We ate what my mom cooked and were happy to get it.
No thought was given to being on a diet or watching your weight. We had no picky eaters at our house. Food could not be wasted because we did not have the money to buy any replacement foods. However, I remember the nights in the front yard with my grandma and grandpa, my mom and dad, and all my brothers and sisters, and a few friends. We sat around making homemade ice cream while the grown ups told stories of fighting Indians and traveling to Texas from Arkansas in a covered wagon. Those were the good old days!
I am telling you about my days of growing up so you will understand where we were in that day and time. No one gave any thought to our diet. We ate what we had and were thankful for it. Now after all those years of eating everything I should not have eaten, the medical profession is trying to convert us to their way of thinking. They want us to change everything we have done for 30 years and eat humus and fiber and like it! I do not even know what they are.
I understand we did it all wrong back then but Rome was not built in a day, or so they say. Thus, you cannot convert our thinking to their way of thinking overnight. I realize I have to lose weight, keep my blood sugar levels low, never drink alcohol, stop eating sugar, lay off eating fried potatoes, homemade bread, spaghetti and homemade ice cream.
if we want to live a long healthy life, that is what we have to do. I know it is the right thing to do for our health and for our families sake. However, some days I just want some fried potatoes on a piece of bread with some sweet tea and some homemade ice cream!
You see I do not want to worry about my cholesterol all the time or how much I weigh, or my blood sugar levels. I just want a homemade fried chocolate pie!
I understand people live longer today than they did yesterday, but I bet more people died with a smile on their face then than they do now. How much fun can it be to live your whole life without a chicken fried steak with lots of cream gravy and homemade rolls?
Now that you know where I am coming from, here is where I am going. I am working very hard to lower my weight, my blood sugar levels, my cholesterol, my blood pressure, my triglycerides, and raise my HDL. If I knew what to eat to lower all those things I would try my best to eat them, but I am more interested in what I can eat to raise my HDL because it is the only thing I can raise.
If you are like me you are looking for a diet that is a miracle diet so you can get real skinny real fast, like over night! Then I can start eating again. Now do not tell the doctor I said that.
Well anyway, I am on a diet and I plan to lower everything that needs to be lowered and raise the one thing that needs to be raised. I am watching my blood sugar levels because my family needs me. I am learning to eat fruits and vegetables and loving them. I am off the sugar and, you know, when you get off you start not missing it. So in spite of myself, I am losing weight, feeling better, and am getting healthier. Even the doctor is happy.
So if you are following in my footsteps, do what I am doing. Get thinner and healthier and you will be happier because your family will be happier. They want you to live a long time.
However, no one can take my memories away. I still remember sitting in the front yard, turning the crank on the homemade ice cream freezer and I can remember how good it tasted. I can always have some in my mind!
