The vaporizer was the first instrument used to modify the breathable air in a room. Its main function was to add a vapor with some form of healing compound in it such as a menthol-like product to clear airways. The unit would heat up to produce a vapor, which permeated the room - the rising steam the only method of dispersal.

A vaporizer can also be adapted for directly inhaling the vapors of certain materials via the use of different smoking/inhaling accessories. Vaporizers have come a long way since your grandmother's day. Today there are many variations and sizes available and the manufactured quality is superb on some units. Understanding why you require a method of modifying air quality in a room is an important first step in deciding between a humidifier and a vaporizer.

Humidifiers were engineered originally as an alternative to the vaporizer because the process of heating to generate the vapor steam was scalding many children. Thus, humidifiers were designed to emit moisture into the air in both a warm and cool mist. Warm mist humidifiers work similar to vaporizers by heating the water to produce a mist but this mist is dispersed by a fan. Cool mist humidifying is very effective and safe. These units can be left on for extended periods without the threat of burning down your dwelling or hurting small children!

Whether you are using a humidifier or a vaporizer you need to be sure you clean them thoroughly since they make an ideal spawning ground for harmful bacteria and fungus. You can use vinegar to clean both a humidifier and a vaporizer. If the buildup is bad, use some toilet bowl cleaner only once while wearing gloves and be sure to have adequate ventilation. Subsequent cleaning you can use the vinegar in water once per week. Try using apple vinegar since it smells better.

Vaporizers in particular are used as a personal inhaling device used to vaporize different plant material and scented matter to form a vapor for the ensuing inhalation. Humidifiers are used to treat and moisten the air in an entire house or room, depending on the unit. The devices and their intended usage are very different today and each has developed into their own unique niche. One should not confuse the differences between a humidifier and a vaporizer.

Used properly in the right conditions a vaporizer can actually make a person at least feel cooler since adding water vapor to a temperate setting preserves the optimal amount of humidity in that area. Humidifiers will continuously provide moisture to the air in individual rooms. Some units were designed to work with a furnace system but results from these household devices have been disappointing to some users.

Most vaporizers contain a heating element in their bottom, a middle storage section for inhalant or vaporizing material that becomes heated then dispersing vapor. The vapor is either distributed locally from the unit or trapped in a bladder area for inhaling with pipe whips or some other accessory.

Humidifiers are available in portable units so they can more easily be moved between rooms. The major difference from a vaporizer is the fan attachment (though some vaporizers also have a fan) which forces the moisture-laden air throughout the room. There is a small reservoir located in the back of the device so water can be stowed and replaced as it evaporates. The water is heated to optimal levels and moisture is dispersed into the air.
