One of the most useful ways to stop smoking is to identify what it is that makes you want to have a cigarette. For some people, a cigarette comes after eating, for others, it happens when they are stressed out. Knowing that the craving is coming is one of the best ways to defend against it and as the saying goes, forewarned is forearmed.
If you like to smoke after meals, replace the cigarette with something else that you enjoy, such as a small dessert or a candy or two. Try to keep the alternative as healthy as you can, but a single piece of candy cannot be as harmful as a whole cigarette. Try distracting yourself with television or with a handheld game, depending on what you want to do. You may end up replacing one mental addiction with another, though, so consider carefully whether that is something you are willing to do.
Many people smoke while they are stressed out, but replacing cigarettes with another stress-relieving aid can often help. Stress balls for rolling around in your hands can work, but it is different for every person. Just try doing something else when you are stressed instead of smoking; you already know that the want of a cigarette has been created by the stress and your subconscious is reacting to it, but that doesn't mean you have to give into that manufactured want. You have the choice to ignore it and ignoring it is the best thing you can do.
Another important thing to do is remove all of the reminders about smoking you can from your home. Ash trays should be inconvenient to find and so should cigarette lighters. The more inconvenient you can make it to smoke, the more success you are likely to have in the quitting process.
The last thing you want to do is pretend that patches, pills, and gums will solve your smoking problems; you have to have the will to quit to go behind it or you will never succeed. Manufacturers of medications to help you quit smoking line their pockets with tons of profit while their products only work a tiny percentage of the time. Consider carefully before deciding which route to take when you attempt to quit smoking, but no matter which one you choose, make sure you are dead set on quitting. You will feel better and your family will feel better knowing you are doing something to stop.
